MTG Secret Lair, Best Drop, Current Sales, Crossover List

Over the past few years, the MTG Secret Lair has risen to prominence from massive controversy. Players lost their minds when the Walking Dead crossover near the beginning of this enterprise was announced. Now, Secret Lairs are a common part of the MTG product cycle.

Despite this, MTG Secret Lair products are perhaps the most difficult ones to keep track of. Each sale has multiple releases, sometimes in different languages, that all sell out at different speeds. Because the quantity of these cards is so limited, there can be some absurd premiums when purchasing individual cards from these releases.

Everything you need to know about MTG Secret Lair products can be found here.

MTG Secret Lair

Offering a curated collection of cards with beautiful artwork, unimaginable crossovers, and the odd mechanically unique card as well, Secret Lairs are a massive part of Magic: The Gathering. Each Secret Lair drop generally offers a collection of cards (ranging from 3 to, in extreme cases, 30) that players generally have access to ahead of time.

The product is complete with one mystery bonus card that players do not know of until the Secret Lair reaches your home. Sometimes, bonus cards are set to the Secret Lair. Other times, bonus cards can include one of many randomized MTG cards. Some of these cards are surprisingly expensive.

For a while, Secret Lair products were print-to-demand and were on sale for a limited time. Now, a majority of Secret Lairs are limited-run products. This means that when they run out, they are no longer for sale.

While this creates a massive amount of demand for certain Secret Lair products, it also creates accessibility issues for players. In extreme cases, these Secret Lair products can sell out in an hour. Many MTG players won’t even have the opportunity to order products before they sell out.

Fortunately, Secret Lair is trying its best to find a reasonable balance between not overprinting products, but printing enough that players are satisfied. Trends with recent Secret Lair products suggest that they are getting closer to this number.

Secret Lair List: Crossovers

Some of the most sought-after Secret Lair products offer a crossover between Magic: The Gathering and another intellectual property. Players can enjoy characters from another favored fandom through these Secret Lair products. These occasionally even grab the attention of collectors in the fandom that Magic is collaborating with.

As a result, it is incredibly common for Secret Lair crossovers to sell out aggressively. Fortunately, these Secret Lairs are generally still available on the secondary market after the sale period ends but expect to pay a premium on these products.

Here’s a list of all the crossovers that MTG Secret Lair has been a part of:

Upcoming MTG Secret Lair Drop

Pixel Perfect Extra Life 2024 Secret Lair

The latest Secret Lair to hit the scene is the Pixel Perfect Extra Life Secret Lair. Not only does this Secret Lair have some amazing secondary market value, but it also went on sale this week!

Players have been asking for a Secret Lair using this old video game-esque pixel style for quite some time, and this Secret Lair does not disappoint. Follow Fblthp on his adventure to defeat Nicol Bolas and collect some iconic instants and sorceries along the way. The crown jewel of this Secret Lair is definitely Fierce Guardianship.

One of the best cards in the Commander format, it’s difficult to beat a counterspell that costs zero mana. For obvious reasons, this card has an impressive market value of $35 in its cheapest iteration. This almost pays for the $40 asking price for a nonfoil Pixel Perfect Secret Lair on its own. Throw in the premium that this single will likely ask on the secondary market, and combine the fact that this Secret Lair will donate 50% of its proceeds to Extra Life, and you have an absolute no-brainer of a Secret Lair purchase.

It would be nice if every Secret Lair was this good, but frankly, that is far from the case. As stated in the picture above, this Secret Lair release date is October 14th. The drop will remain on sale until November 17th.

Fortunately, unlike most Secret Lairs nowadays, this Secret Lair is not a limited print run. Wizards of the Coast will print this Secret Lair to demand. That said, the longer you wait to purchase this Secret Lair, the longer it may take to ship. There are some pre-printed Secret Lair products that will ship quickly, but if yours isn’t part of the pre-printed quantity, it will take longer to get to your door.

Best MTG Secret Lair

The main selling point of Secret Lair products is the wacky artwork provided. Since this is highly subjective, it’s difficult to rank a Secret Lair based on art. So, we’ll take a look at financial value, instead.

Notably, when considering this, we’re only looking at a typical singular Secret Lair drop. Bundles and premium Commander decks will not be included. Here be Dragons, another Secret Lair that is very close to being typical, but is not quite there since it offers a ton of non-game token merchandise, will also not be counted.

By this metric, the most expensive Secret Lair on the secondary market right now is Purrfection. As you may expect, there is a catch that makes this Secret Lair rather expensive. Costing about $210 on average on the secondary market, this Secret Lair is incredibly rare. Offered as a special release for Hasbro’s Pulsecon in 2021, Purrfection has a very limited print run. That said, the Secret Lair only offers four promo reprints – Chain Lightning, Generous Gift, Heirloom Blade, and Kodama’s Reach. This mirrors the typical style of a Secret Lair drop, so it counts towards this small nod.
