Horrifying MTG Chucky Secret Lair Offers Abysmal Value

Every year, more and more unique crossovers are making their way into the world of MTG. Even in just the upcoming Secret Lair Superdrop releasing on September 30, Hatsune Miku and Ghostbusters-themed products are on their way!

Well, as it turns out, there are even more Universes Beyond Secret Lairs than we expected. Just recently revealed by IGN, a new collection of cards depicting unique Chucky references will be available for purchase on September 30 as well!

Following in the footsteps of Duskmourn’s horror style, a Chucky-themed Secret Lair seems very appropriate. Unfortunately, the cards themselves are pretty unexciting from a value perspective, especially in non-foil. So, for those hoping to pick up some pricy reprints, you may need to look elsewhere.

Kardur, Doomscourge

Kardur, Doomscourge

Kicking things off, we have Kardur Doomscourge. This product is yet another example of a Secret Lair showcasing a legendary creature of choice and a handful of cards that work well with the Commander in question. The art and design of this version of Kardur is very amusing. On one side, you see a prepackaged version of Chucky that looks completely innocent. On the other, you see Chucky’s demonic side, hence why Kardur is a good fit.

Kardur, Doomscourge

Kardur is an interesting Commander option, forcing your opponents to attack each other when it enters the battlefield. Add in some Goading effects like Disrupt Decorum and ways to blink Kardur, such as Conjurer’s Closet, and you’re in business.

Nonetheless, there are plenty of other Demons that would have been more appealing financially. As an uncommon from Kaldheim, Kardur is only worth about 25 cents in its cheapest traditional form, according to TCGPlayer market price.

Phyrexian Reclamation

Phyrexian Reclamation

Arguably the most intriguing reprint in this Secret Lair is none other than Phyrexian Reclamation. Phyrexian Reclamation is a great Commander card. Despite being reprinted in multiple Commander and Jumpstart sets at uncommon, Phyrexian Reclamation still sits above $4 in non-foil. It’s an incredibly efficient card with a powerful, repeatable effect. As long as you’re playing a high density of potent threats, Phyrexian Reclamation should be a decent addition to your black Commander deck.

$4 isn’t that impressive for a Secret Lair reprint, but the reason Phyrexian Reclamation’s reprint is nice is that players may finally have access to a more affordable foil variant. Up to this point, the only foil printing of Phyexian Reclamation is in Urza’s Legacy. According to TCGPlayer market price, near mint foils of Phyrexian Reclamation hold a price tag of just over $53! Considering that most foil Secret Lairs go on sale for $39.99, Phyrexian Reclamation’s inclusion in this product may encourage more players to buy it, even if the overall reprint value is lacking.

Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire

Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire

Varragoth, Bloodsky Sire is another decent Commander card. Being able to repeatedly Vampiric Tutor for any card you want is quite powerful. You obviously need to be able to attack with Varragoth to get value from it, but the upside is very high.

With artwork portraying Tiffany Valentine, this card is rather creepy looking. Once again, though, there are more Demons to choose from that would have been better financial additions to the Secret Lair. Varragoth sits a little over $3, which is nothing special.

Twinflame

Twinflame

Twinflame is another card that has decent applications in Commander. Kardur is legendary, but getting to copy it and get another enters-the-battlefield trigger is nice. Of course, Twinflame gets better the more mana you sink into it and the more creatures with potent triggered abilities you have access to.

Twinflame does hold some reprint value, as Journey into Nyx copies sit at just over $4. Either way, we’re obviously hoping for a bit more out of these Secret Lairs.

Genesis Chamber and Overall Value

Genesis Chamber

Rounding things out, we have Genesis Chamber. Genesis Chamber is definitely a sweet card in a deck built around the Goad mechanic and other ways to make opposing creatures attack each other. As such, it makes sense to include in this Secret Lair that features Kardur at the helm. Genesis Chamber helps everyone build out big boards, making Kardur’s triggered abilities that much more threatening.

Regardless, Genesis Chamber is worth about $2, which isn’t ideal. This means that the priciest non-foil card in the Secret Lair is Phyrexian Reclamation, which is rather disappointing. In total, this puts the non-foil reprint value for the MTG Chucky Secret Lair at about $14-$15. For reference, this is less than Liliana of the Dark Realms alone, which appears in the upcoming Hatsune Miku Secret Lair. This makes the MTG Chucky Secret Lair one of the least valuable Secret Lairs in a while.

Overall, while players seem pleased with the card choices based purely on flavor, the general consensus is that the product needs better card selection. With this in mind, there’s a good chance this Secret Lair is overshadowed by the others in the Superdrop. If you’re a big Chucky fan or you want to add some pizzazz to your Kardur Commander deck, this could still be up your alley, though. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for any other Secret Lairs that get previewed in the coming days.
