Doctor Who Is Coming to MTG!

Article at a Glance

During 2022’s Wizards Presents, Wizards of the Coast announced a brand new otherworldly crossover coming to Magic: the Gathering. It may even be the most ambitious crossover to date, as Doctor Who is coming to MTG! Releasing as part of Doctor Who’s 60th Anniversary celebrations, this Universes Beyond series should be remembered!

Featuring “all the Doctors, their companions, [and] the villains” as Magic cards, according to Magic’s Director of Global Brand Strategy, Rebecca Shepard, this crossover is undoubtedly expansive. This is only fitting since Doctor Who is the longest-running action-adventure TV series in the world. To go along with Doctor Who’s record-breaking universe, Wizards is releasing a similarly impressive haul of products!

In a press briefing, it was revealed that alongside Doctor Who’s illustrious history of Doctors, the Universes Beyond crossover would also feature aspects of the franchise’s future. Unfortunately, to keep themselves from getting in trouble with the BBC, Wizards of the Coast was typically coy with details. Despite this, we can only imagine the 14th Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, may be making a surprise appearance.

Doctor Who Universes Beyond Commander Decks

The flagship product of this expansive crossover is a series of Doctor Who Universes Beyond Commander decks. There will be four Commander decks for fans of Magic and Doctor Who alike to enjoy. Each deck will be filled with Doctors, companions, villains, and locations from across the show’s 60-year history. The names of the Commander decks aren’t known yet. However, we do know one exciting detail; the rough release date.

The Doctor Who Universes Beyond Commander Decks are expected to release in Q3 of 2023.

Doctor Who Universes Beyond Collector Boosters

Alongside launching as Commander Decks, Whovians can look forward to Doctor Who-themed MTG packs to open! Unfortunately, this doesn’t mean that the Doctor Who Universes Beyond series is an entire set. Instead, Wizards of the Coast is only releasing Collector Boosters for the collaborative set. While this may be a disappointment for Draft fans, Collectors should welcome the foil alternate art cards that’ll be offered in these packs.

To make the Collector Boosters even more lucrative, there will, as usual, be alternative foiling treatments available. The name or style of these treatments has not been confirmed yet. As a result, it’s unclear if the Doctor Who Universes Beyond Collector Boosters will be getting an entirely unique foiling. If not, we imagine that Unfinity’s Galaxy foils would be an incredibly fitting foiling technique.

If Commander Decks and Collector Boosters weren’t enough already, the Doctor Who Universes Beyond crossover is getting even more content. To make the 60th-anniversary celebrations as special as possible, Wizards is also releasing Doctor Who Secret Lair drops. It’s currently unclear which characters will be included in the Secret Lair drops and if they’ll include brand new cards. Despite this, as longtime fans of the show, we’re nonetheless excited for this crossover!
