New Commander Spoilers Reveal Enormous Extra-Turn Spell!

Article at a Glance

The last Commander deck from Commander Masters has now been revealed, along with 10 new cards. From cool Enchantments to beloved Slivers, these spoilers definitely have some interesting themes. This deck’s theme is none other than Eldrazi. As you might expect, the Eldrazi Unbound deck is all about big and flashy colorless spells.

While having a colorless Commander certainly restricts the options available for deckbuilding, there are still plenty of powerful cards to play that don’t require colored mana. Without needing to cast spells of different colors, these decks also get to utilize tons of utility Lands since mana fixing is not an issue. With a powerful Commander and the right support, these strategies can be very strong, and the primary Commander absolutely packs a punch.

Zhulodok, Void Gorger

Zhuludrok, Void Gorger

Zhulodok is the main Commander for the Eldrazi Unbound deck, and boy is it a good one. This card costs six mana, one of which must be colorless, and gives an enormous bonus to every colorless card you cast afterwards with mana value seven or greater. Each card you cast from your hand with Zhulodok in play has two instances of Cascade, letting you cast two additional spells with lesser mana value from your deck for free.

This Commander is all about casting big spells, and the payoff for doing so is huge. What’s cool is that as long as the mana value of the card you cast is seven or greater, you get to Cascade twice whether you paid full value for the spell or not. Therefore, cards like Not of This World work extremely well with Zhulodok, especially because Zhulodok has seven power. Of course, it’s important to solidify your curve with mana rocks and interaction to buy you time to cast your big spells. As we will see, there are plenty of new impactful spells printed that cost seven or more mana, so bridging the gap to the late game is very necessary.

Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate

Omarthis, Ghostfire Initiate

Omarthis is in interesting inclusion. On its own, the card acts similar to Hangarback Walker in that it enters with x plus-one plus-one counters on it, and has a triggered ability when it dies related to the number of counters on it. In this case, it lets you Manifest that many cards from the top of your library. However, instead of being able to add counters itself, Omarthis gets additional counters whenever you put more plus-one plus-one counters on other permanents.

This card is definitely excellent as a build-around Commander in a deck full of other Creatures that can gain counters and cards like The Ozolith, but it does take some work to maximize the card. It’s still a good mana sink, and the Manifest ability works well with large Eldrazi, but it’s best when fully built around.

Rise of the Eldrazi

Rise of the Eldrazi

This card is a doozy. It costs 12 mana and given that three mana is required to be colorless, not every deck can play it. As a result, this is definitely a payoff for a colorless deck, and if you have 12 mana, it certainly delivers. First, it can’t be countered, so there’s very little fear in tapping out for this powerful Sorcery. Next, you get to destroy any permanent, including Lands. You also get to draw four cards, and if that wasn’t enough, you take an extra turn to help make use of those cards!

With Zhulodok in play, you will even get to Cascade twice after casting this. This is a top tier haymaker for this deck, but it does require work to be able to cast it. Make sure to come prepared with copies of Sol Ring and other mana rocks to help get you there.

Flayer of Loyalties

Flayer of Loyalties

Flayer of Loyalties is another huge haymaker for this deck built around big Eldrazi. When you cast this card, you get to gain control of any Creature, give it a temporary power boost plus Trample, Haste, and Annihilator two, and attack anyone of your choosing. After this transaction, you are even left with a 10-power Creature with Trample and Annihilator two for your troubles. Again, this card costs a lot of mana, so using cards to ramp up to it is very important.

Desecrate Reality

Desecrate Reality

Desecrate Reality is yet another card that costs seven or more mana, set to work well with Zhulodok. This is a strange card that lets you destroy opposing permanents, but only if they have even mana value. Notably, this does include Lands, so this card will almost always have good targets. This card also gives you a bonus if you spend at least three colorless mana to cast it, which should be easy for colorless decks to do. The bonus is that you get to return a permanent with odd mana value from your graveyard to the battlefield. Going directly into play is a big deal, and it’s quite likely you will have something juicy to return.

Darksteel Monolith

Darksteel Monolith

As mentioned, it’s easy to fill your deck with tons of high mana value cards, but the trick is being able to utilize them all in time. Darksteel Monolith may cost a lot up front, but it helps provide a big rebate on mana over time. The card itself has Indestructible, so it’s likely to stick around for a while. From there, every turn, you can cast one colorless spell for free. Even while casting the card for free, you still get the Cascade bonuses from Zhulodok.

Notably, because this card says once EACH turn, you can cast a spell for free on your turn as well as colorless Instants, such as Desecrate Reality, on each of your opponents’ turns. With massive cards like Rise of the Eldrazi in your deck, its easy for this card to pull its weight.

Calamity of the Titans

Calamity of the Titans

One thing that can be difficult for colorless decks to do is interact with the opponent, especially in the early turns. While this card isn’t super cheap, it does help reset the board state, helping to buy you time to cast your big spells. When behind, you ideally want a big Creature in your hand to reveal to Calamity of the Titans to help get rid of all Creatures and Planeswalkers that your opponents control. However, this card is also quite flexible. If you control the biggest Creatures around, you can reveal a colorless Creature with lesser mana value and potentially make Calamity of the Titans act similar to Plague Wind. As long as you have big, colorless Creatures in your deck, this card is very strong.

Ugin’s Mastery

Ugin's Mastery

Ugin’s Mastery does a decent job of bridging the gap until you can get to your big spells. Every time you cast a colorless Creature spell with this in play, you get to Manifest the top card of your library. Then if you attack with total power six or greater, you can turn one of those face-down Creature face up. In a deck filled with massive Eldrazi, this card can not only generate a ton of value, but it can also help put enormous Creatures in play essentially for free as long as you are fortunate with what cards you Manifest. This card is cheap and rewards you for playing big, colorless Creatures, which is exactly what a Zhulodok deck needs.

Skittering Cicada

Skittering Cicada

Skittering Cicada is yet another card that you can play early that still works well with big, colorless spells. This card has Flash and lets you play colorless spells as though they had Flash, which helps provide an element of surprise to your deck, especially alongside Cascade triggers thanks to Zhulodok. Additionally, this card gets a big power boost and gains trample whenever you cast colorless spells. In a deck full of them, this card makes combat a nightmare for the opponent.

If they block with a small Creature, you can cast a spell at Instant speed and potentially Trample over for a ton of damage. Likewise, if your opponent attacks into this, you can cast a big colorless spell and ambush their Creature. If you have enough mana, you can even cast this and another big colorless spell all in the same turn and really catch your opponents off guard.

Abstruse Archaic

Abstruse Archaic

This Creature can do a cool Strionic Resonator impression and let you copy triggered abilities of permanents you control. This works well with enters-the-battlefield effects as well as Annihilator abilities from your large Eldrazi. This can also copy activated abilities too, which can help you draw extra cards from Dreamstone Hedron, for example. The real bonus for a Zhulodok deck though is still to copy Cascade triggers. Cascading twice is already very strong and doing it three times can be backbreaking for the opponents.
