Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty is officially out and, if you haven’t heard, foil-etched cards are back. There are only twelve of them and they’re quite rare to find. As of release weekend, these are some of the most expensive Standard cards in a long time.
***All prices here forward are taken on the first day of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty‘s release. This is the first time Wizards of the Coast printed foil-etched cards in a Standard set so there’s nothing to compare these prices to. As more product is opened and more copies hit the market, Neon Dynasty‘s foil-etched prices will likely trend downwards. But only time will tell if and how much they will fall. There’s a chance their prices will hold well simply due to their rarity.
#12) Explosive Singularity – $5.00
Explosive Singularity might look cool in foil-etch, like a consuming, glittering fireball. But the card itself is not very good.
It doesn’t seem playable in Standard, Pioneer, or Modern. The only format Explosive Singularity could see play in is Commander in decks like Krenko, Mob Boss or Magda, Brazen Outlaw. But its Commander applications are niche, hence its low price.
#11) Risona, Asari Commander – $7.00
There are some interesting things you can do with Risona in Commander. You can move indestructibility counters around with Nesting Ground and The Ozolith.
But there are so many good Commanders in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, many of which will be more popular than Risona. (Personally, I wish WOTC gave this slot to Isshin, Two Heavens As One, a much more popular Commander.)

#10) Satoru Umezawa – $13.00
According to EDHREC, Satoru currently holds the spot for the most popular Commander out of the set. The only reason his foil-etched card is not more expensive is because there are many varients of Satoru in the set (regular art, ninja frame, and Buy-A-Box promo).
#9) Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh – $27.00
I’m surprised this card doesn’t rank higher compared to the other foil-etched cards. But at the time of writing, Tezzeret, Betrayer of Flesh is a legitimately good planeswalker.
His static ability provides a great discount on the activation costs of many popular artifacts like Expedition Map, Sword of Fire and Ice, and Shadowspear that are played across Magic formats. Plus, it is relatively easy to work Tezzeret up to his ultimate ability.

#8) Farewell – $29.00
This is one of the best board wipes ever printed for Commander. It can deal with a range of permanents and exiles them forever. It’s no wonder the foil-etched Farewell is so expensive.
#7) Blade of the Oni – $35.00
This is one foil-etched card I definitely see going down in price. A card’s price is mostly determined by its playability in Commander and Modern. And Blade of the Oni just doesn’t cut it in those formats.

#6) Nashi, Moon Sage’s Scion – $55.00
Here’s where the foil-etched cards start to get pricy.
Nashi will be a solid Commander presence. It is a must include in Ninja decks like Yuriko, the Tiger’s Shadow and Satoru Umezawa. But it is good enough that other decks will pick it up too.
#5) Kodama of the West Tree – $60.00
Kodama can make for a good Commander in its own right. But Kodama also synergizes well in many other Commander decks like Hamza, Guardian of Arashin, Chishiro, the Shattered Blade, and Ghave, Guru of spores to name a few. For those reasons, it makes sense that Kodama is one of the pricier foil-etched cards from Kamigawa.

#4) Kaito Shizuki – $67.00
Other than being a central figure of the set, Kaito’s card is also really good. Players will test this planeswalker out across Magic: the Gathering formats.
#3) Tamiyo, Compleated Sage – $85.00
She’s a long-time fan-favorite planeswalker. Or she *was*, anyways. Tamiyo has fallen to the Phyrexians. But she gets a cool Phyrexian alternate card in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty. And it can come in foil-etched too.

#2) The Wandering Emperor – $122.00
The mystery behind The Wanderer has been solved. She is back in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, but this time with a face to the name. Her card gets a beautiful alternate art by Hisashi Momose and the potential to come in foil-etched on top of that.
#1) Jin-Gitaxias, Progress Tyrant – $148.00
There’s no surprise that this is the most expensive of the foil-etched cards. Phyrexians are back and they’re plotting something devious in Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty.
At the time of writing, the foil-etched Jin-Gitaxias is almost worth an entire Collector Booster Box.
