Unique MTG Japanese Christmas Promo Offers Pricy Playmat as a Reward

In November 2024, a very interesting set is set to make its way to local store shelves. Known as MTG Foundations, this collection of cards is designed to help newer players become immersed in our beloved game. The cards featured in the associated products will indeed be Standard legal, but this time, they won’t be affected by traditional rotation. We already know some historically powerful cards will be available, such as Llanowar Elves. There’s a lot to look forward to with the release of MTG Foundations.

Well, for players living in Japan, it appears there are additional incentives for purchasing MTG Foundations play boosters. Known as The Wanderer’s Christmas Campaign, this promotion blends the beauty of the holiday season with the appeal of cracking packs. Let’s take a look at what this promo has to offer.

MTG Foundations Promo

Chibi Character Sticker Art

The way this Japanese promotion works is rather simple. For every six MTG Foundations play boosters that someone purchases, they get a chibi character sticker as a reward. There are a multitude of different stickers players can receive, and you can find the gallery here.

Notably, it sounds like a couple of the stickers are special and stand out beyond the others. These winner’s stickers will likely be a hot commodity, as they can be exchanged at will for a playmat or group of card sleeves illustrated by the legendary artist Fuzichoco. Fuzichoco has designed the art for cards such as Farewell (showcase version) and Spectral Sailor (Jumpstart 2022 variant).

Player Reaction and Price

Ultimately, this structure seems like a really cool way to encourage players to purchase MTG Foundations booster product. It appears as though many players are disappointed that this promo is exclusive to Japan. The artwork on the Christmas-themed playmat shown above is very amusing, and clearly is a hit with the player base.

Unfortunately, given how exclusive the winner’s stickers are, getting your hands on a playmat may not be easy. For reference, a similar playmat featuring The Wanderer and Kaito was displayed alongside The Wanderer’s Summer Festival Campaign. The structure for the Summer Festival Campaign was nearly the same as the upcoming Christmas Campaign, just with players buying Bloomburrow boosters instead.

As it turns out, the playmat depicting The Wanderer and Kaito was selling on Mercari for 14,000 Yen, which roughly translates to $97. This showcases the scarcity of these unique playmats. With this in mind, it’ll be cool to see if any similar promotions work their way to other parts of the world in the future. If you’re fortunate enough to get your hands on the awesome Christmas playmat, make sure to take good care of it!
