Article at a Glance

Bristlebud Farmer is seeing a significant secondary market increase this week. Considering that the card is a 5/5 for 4 with a significant upside, it’s surprising the card hasn’t seen a price increase sooner. The extended art foil variant is the one making the most noise, jumping from $4 to $20. That said, this price spike is very sudden, so it’s likely that Bristlebud Farmer will stabilize to something a bit less extreme. Otherwise, the normal variant will also increase in price.

Bristlebud Farmer

  • Mana Value: 2GG
  • Rarity: Mythic Rare
  • Stats: 5/5
  • MTG Sets: The Big Score
  • Card Text: Trample, When Bristlebud Farmer enters the battlefield, create two Food tokens (They’re artifacts with (2) (tap), Sacrifice this artifact: You gain 3 life.) Whenever Bristlebud Farmer attacks, you may sacrifice a Food. If you do, mill three cards. You may put a permanent card from among them into your hand.

Bristlebud Farmer is the type of MTG card that would make an older player sweat. This creature is above-rate in terms of stats, doesn’t have a heavily restrictive mana value, and is strict card advantage – as long as it gets a chance to attack. Even if it doesn’t, Bristlebud Farmer creates two Food tokens, which can be used for Foraging purposes. Otherwise, gaining life is perfectly fine as well.

Bristlebud Farmer primarily sees play in two places: Standard and Commander. Even then, the card’s Standard representation is limited at best.

Food has received continued support over the past year. Beginning in Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, continuing in Wilds of Eldraine, and even receiving a new keyword that interacts with it in Bloomburrow, there are a lot of new strategies that could be interested in Bristlebud Farmer in Commander.

Price Increases

When looking at the card’s basic variant, Bristlebud Farmer has been increasing in price since mid-July. Once worth about $1.50 on average, Bristlebud Farmer has jumped to about $5. There are outliers for as high as $10 for foil iterations of this card, but it’s important to remember that this card is part of the Big Score. This means that the non-foil normal version of the card is much more common than its other iterations. While that one can be found in Outlaws of Thunder Junction Play Boosters, all of the other variants of this card can only be found in Collector Booster packs.

While Bristlebud Farmer is increasing in price across variants, getting a fancy version of the card will likely be a bit more expensive as long as it sits in the limelight. The difference in rarity between the standard variation and the other variants that this card has to offer cannot be overstated.
