Duskmourn spoiler season is now upon us, and it’s clear that this set has a ton to offer. If you’re a fan of the new horror-themed plane, this set should be an absolute blast. There are a boatload of new mechanics and booster fun treatments that help give the set its own unique identity, which should help keep things fresh and exciting.
Beyond just the cards that are appearing in the main set, it appears there are a multitude of useful products coming out as well. Recently, we mentioned the release of the Nightmare Bundle that could be a great gift item for someone who loves the game. Today, we’re going to talk about a long-awaited product that should serve as a great tool for newer players. Known as Welcome Decks, these preconstructed collections can make it easier to teach players the fundamentals of MTG.
What Are Welcome Decks
The new Welcome Decks are designed in a very similar way to Jumpstart sets over the past few years. There are a total of five mini-decks, one for each color. Each color has 13 basic lands, 2 rares (albeit bulk rares), a few uncommons and a bunch of commons, totaling to 30 cards. None of the cards present are overly complicated, but there are a wide variety of different keywords present across all the cards.
The goal is for players to shuffle up any two mini-decks they choose to end up with 60-card decks. From there, it’s easy to play games like normal and for newer players to begin to grasp various concepts that make our beloved game so enjoyable.
Notably, these decks are not Standard legal, as they include cards from across MTG’s history. The cards in each deck are all reprints, but with Planeswalker stamps in the bottom left separating them from their original printings. For more information and decklists, you can take a look here.

Player Reaction
Overall, these decks don’t contain much in the way of valuable reprints or anything of the sort. However, that doesn’t mean they aren’t useful, especially at local game stores. Back in late June when Wizards of the Coast revealed the return of Welcome decks, some players felt like this style of product was “way overdue.”
Others mentioned how important it was for local game stores to have access to these types of decks for learn-to-play events. The general consensus seemed to be that Welcome Decks shouldn’t have disappeared in the first place.
Well, now they’re back with a vengeance. If you’re looking to get one of your friends or family members hooked on MTG, look no further.
