New Multiversal MTG Threat Revealed in Duskmourn

As the Duskmourn story finally concludes, a terrifying new villain has been revealed. While this villain originally appeared to just be a part of this story, it appears that they could become the next big evil in the MTG world.

This article is going to contain a lot of spoilers in regard to the Duskmourn story. If you would rather read those stories for yourself, you can do so on the Daily MTG website. There are also audio versions of the main story chapters to listen to if you’d prefer as well. The Duskmourn: House of Horror story has been lauded by countless players, so this should be well worth your while.

Regardless of whether you’re all caught up or not, there are some details we can’t resist talking about. After all, it appears we’ve just had the proper reveal of a major villain in MTG’s future.

Valgavoth, The House and Plane

Duskmourn House of Horror Art

Duskmourn’s fifth chapter revealed that the ‘house’ that everyone has spent their time inside is a lot more sinister than we expected. It turns out that this house, once upon a time, was another resident trapped on the plane. This resident eventually grew to become the House that trapped everything else inside.

Recently given a name, it appears that what is now known as the house was, and is, Valgavoth. Originally intended to be a sort of ‘housing aid’ for the house that Marina Vendrell lived in, Valgavoth was way too powerful, scaring away the previous residents. Despite running, these residents did not release Valgavoth, leaving it to become bitter after years spent in captivity. Marina Vendrell would eventually discover the being when she moved in.

Long story short, Marina was very lonely, and slowly got to know Valgavoth, but was unsure about helping release it. This changed after she was horrendously bullied at school. In a fit of rage, she invited the bullies over, with the intent of Valgavoth ‘taking care of them.’ This allowed Valgavoth to acquire the power of four lives before they took over Duskmourn. According to Zimone, this was enough, along with ‘questionable academic research’ to expand endlessly. Now, Valgavoth is the entirety of Duskmourn.

To put it lightly, Valgavoth is one hell of a villain, having expanded to take over an entire plane of existence. Worryingly, it seems they’re not content with stopping there. In the final chapter of Duskmourn’s story, Valgavoth seemed to hunger for more, after learning about Planeswalker’s ability to, well, planeswalk.

While this is bad news for the multiverse and seemingly Alquist Proft, it’s great news for MTG players. Prior to the final chapter’s release, there were concerns the heroes would kill Valgavoth and emerge victorious. While they did achieve the latter, Valgavoth is still very much alive, well, and hungry.

Will Valgavoth Return?

Given they’re not dead, it seems a given that Valgavoth will return at some point in the future. At the end of the story, a spooky door appears in Proft’s office, showing they’re not done yet. While they’re now a villain in Wizards’ back pocket and a scary one at that, they might not return for some time.

Currently, MTG is going through the three-year Metronome arc which concludes in 2026. While we’re only partway through this major arc, it seems Jace is currently the story’s driving force. There’s a non-zero chance they’ll even be the villain as they attempt to reset the multiverse.

Given that Valgavoth now knows about the multiverse and is hungry for more, they could feasibly appear again during this arc. That being said, it’s equally possible Wizards will just keep them on hold until Magic needs another spooky horror-themed set. Looking at the 2025 release calendar and beyond, no announced plane or theme seems to fit Valgavoth’s return.

Thankfully, even if Valgavoth doesn’t appear for a little while, they’re definitely alive and well. Even if the Omenpaths get closed during the Metronome arc, there’s always a chance they escape. Magic definitely has a new multiversal villain on its hands and players already can’t wait for more.
