With the holiday season fast approaching, it’s high time that you make sure you’ve got all your gifts in order. Typically, this task can often be deceptively difficult, especially if you’re trying to keep the gifts you’re giving under wraps. Thankfully, Magic: the Gathering players can be mercifully easy to buy for. MTG players may be quick to bemoan the number of products coming out, however, it does make for easy gift-giving! With a variety of sets, formats, and supplemental products to choose from, there there are gifts for any MTG player, regardless of their level of experience.

With that in mind, welcome to MTG Rocks’ 2022 Holiday Gift Guide! Listed below are a variety of products suitable for players of all experience levels. Whether your giftee has never touched Magic before, or they’re a FNM regular, this list should hopefully help you find the perfect present! So, without any further ado, let’s get into our Holiday Gift Guide for 2022!

MTG Gifts for New Players

When buying gifts for the new MTG player, play experience should be the most important thing. Sure, enfranchised players want to push their money as far as they can (and they should, this game is expensive), but, at the beginning, being able to provide the magic of Magic with as little barrier-to-entry as possible is important. These gifts can help you do that.

MTG 2022 Starter Kit | $10.99

Magic: The Gathering 2022 Starter Kit

As the name implies, the Magic: the Gathering 2022 Starter Kit is a good place to start. Currently priced at $10.99, Wizards attests that the Starter Kit is a “great way to dive into a game of deep strategy, gorgeous art, fantastical stories, and a thriving fan community.” Featuring two preconstructed decks, as well as a play guide, this kit has everything new players need to get started. Included within the 60-card preconstructed decks are five unique rare cards and one Traditional foil card. This is great for those who are just getting into Magic, or haven’t seen the game before. If your giftee is already playing, however, you may want to consider one of the other gifts on our list.

MTG Starter Commander Decks | $24.95 – $27.59

Draconic Destruction Commander Deck

Stepping up slightly from the Starter Kit, Wizards of the Coast also offers Starter Commander Decks. As the most popular paper MTG format, which offers unrivaled creativity, Commander is an excellent place for new players to start. Subsequently, the Magic: the Gathering Starter Commander Decks can be an excellent gift for players looking to get into Magic. Priced roughly between $25 and $27, Wizards offers a variety of themed decks for new players depending on their preferred playstyle. Similarly to the Starter Kit, the Starter Commander Decks each feature everything you should need to start playing Magic. This includes the 100-card deck, strategy insert, and accessories such as a deck box and 10 double-sided tokens.

Magic: The Gathering Game Night: Free-for-All 2022 | $49.99

Game Night Free-for-All Kit

For those looking to give a gift that can be shared, the Magic: The Gathering Game Night: Free-for-All 2022 box is an great way to entice friends and family into playing. Costing $49.99, this pentagonal box includes five 60-card decks, and all the trimmings. This particular gift functions better as a standalone board game than an upgrade to an established collection, since the play experience is the primary focus for products like this.

Jumpstart 2022 Booster Box | $118.95

Jumpstart 2022 Booster Box

While certainly on the more expensive end, the recently released Jumpstart 2022 product can be a compelling starting point for prospective MTG fans. Offering easily accessible gameplay, art, and valuable reprints, Jumpstart 2022 packs and Booster Boxes can be an enjoyable experience all around. However, it is important to note that Jumpstart 2022 Boxes and packs do not come with instructions on how to play Magic: the Gathering. Subsequently, new players will likely need an existing player as a guide to get the best out of this product.

The plus side to the Jumpstart product line is that playing Magic with these new collectible cards is quite easy. All you need to do is get two packs and put them together. Note that these packs do not come with tokens, so prepare to use replacements to represent those. Either way, this is a great introductory item for a new player that should also deliver some fantastic cards to help build a collection.

MTG Gifts for Experienced Players

The Brothers’ War Gift Bundle | $54.94

The Brothers’ War Gift Bundle

Having existed since Ninth Edition, Bundle products in Magic: the Gathering are nothing new. While most Bundles make for a good gift, this holiday season, Wizards has amped up their offerings. Releasing The Brothers’ War Gift Bundle, Wizards has supposedly created “the perfect gift for the ultimate Magic fan in your life.” Packaged within a commemorative box, The Brother’s War Gift Bundle contains eight Set Boosters, as well as one Collector Booster. Additionally, The Brothers’ War Gift Bundle also contains a variety of accessories, including 40 basic lands, and an oversized spindown life counter. For any Transformers fans out there, the Gift Bundle also contains a foil Transformers Universes Beyond card, and the alternate-art promo card Queen Kayla bin-Kroog.

Ultra Pro Playmats | $20 – $40

Ultra Pro Color Wheel Playmat

If you’re not looking to give your MTG playing giftee cards this holiday season, a quality Playmat is an excellent alternative. As the name suggests, an MTG Playmat provides players with a clean protected space to play their games upon. Personally, we can wholeheartedly recommend the playmats from Ultra Pro, however, a variety of different manufacturers are available. Similarly, MTG Playmats are available at a range of different price points. On Amazon, typically a playmat costs between $20 and $30, however, the rarest playmats can sell for upwards of $2000!

Ultra Pro Deck Boxes | $6 – $30

Ultra Pro Mythic Edition Alcove Flip Deck Box

Similar to Playmats, Deck Boxes can be an excellent gift for MTG players that may already have a few too many cards. Available in a variety of styles and finishes, Deck Boxes can keep cards out of sight and protected from any accidents that may occur. Many Deck Boxes also feature compartments to store accessories such as dice or tokens, which can be helpful if your particular giftee is disorganized. Generally, MTG players will be interested in deck boxes that hold 100+ cards since that supports all of the most commonly played formats. Ultra Pro’s “Mythic Edition Alcove Vault” Deck Box, for instance, can hold upwards of 275 Double Sleeved Cards + Dice.

Magic Boom! Comics

Magic BOOM! Comics Volume 4

First published in 2021, the Magic comic books from BOOM! Studios make a great, somewhat unorthodox, gift for MTG players who have it all. While non-canonical, these comic books are fantastic reads which utilize Magic’s vast multiverse and iconic roster of characters. Written by Jed MacKay and illustrated by Ig Guara, four hardcover volumes of Magic comics are available on Amazon. BOOM! Studios also produces one-shot character-focused comics, such as the recently released “MAGIC: Ajani Goldmane  #1.”

MTG Gifts for Veteran Players

Modern Horizons 2 Collector Booster Box | $410.33

Modern Horizons 2 Collector Booster Box

When shopping for the MTG player that has it all, unfortunately, gifts can get rather expensive. The Modern Horizons 2 Collector Booster Box is a prime example of that, being priced at $410.33. While undoubtedly expensive, this is a gift that every MTG player will want to receive. Promising tremendous value and some of the best cards ever printed, any Modern Horizons 2 product will create an exciting opening experience.

Weird Draft Booster Boxes | $80 – $270

Unfinity Draft Booster Box

Alternatively, on the less expensive end of the spectrum, a box of Draft Boosters can be an amazing gift. Providing a compelling gameplay experience as well as the joy of opening packs, Draft Boosters do it all. While any Draft Booster Box is a pleasure to receive, niche boxes such as Unfinity, Battlebond, Commander Legends, and Conspiracy, provide a special drafting experience that can be enjoyed by their whole MTG playgroup.

MTG Art | $20 – $6,000

Adorable Kitten
Adorable Kitten | Unstable

Should buying cards not appeal to your gift-giving sensibilities, official Magic: the Gathering art can be a fantastic alternative. Priced at between $20 and $6,000 Magic: the Gathering art prints allow you to commemorate your giftee’s beloved hobby. Whether gifting a print of their favorite card, or just some art that looks really cool, art prints are sure to be a beloved gift. After all, who wouldn’t want a 30-inch print of Adorable Kitten?!
