Stranger Things Star Maya Hawke Joins Magic: The Gathering Movie

Some star power for this long-awaited flick!

Today, we finally got an update on the long-awaited MTG movie, with the confirmation that Maya Hawke will be part of the film’s cast. This is the first casting announcement for the film, which comes to us via Legendary Pictures, and indeed the first substantial announcement about the film in general.

With this fresh news, it looks like things are finally starting to move for the MTG movie, which was announced in February last year. While it’s still early days, a casting of this caliber is a great sign, both for the health of the project and the eventual quality of the film when it graces our screens.

Maya Hawke is a name you’ll likely recognize if you’re even reasonably up to date on your TV and film. She’s best known for her role as Robin Buckley in Netflix’s Stranger Things, of course, but she’s also starred in heavy hitters like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, Asteroid City, and Inside Out 2.

Hawke is a fantastic addition to the cast of the upcoming MTG movie. While her exact role is yet to be announced, Deadline notes that it’s “expected to be a key role,” and that the film’s producers singled her out as a priority casting.

With no specific role revealed today, MTG players on social media are having a lot of fun trying to predict which character Hawke will be playing. Chandra Nalaar is probably the most popular guess so far, but other planeswalkers like Liliana and Elspeth are very much in the conversation too. One maverick even threw Fblthp into the prediction ring, which is very unlikely, though a later suggestion that the Homunculus will join the cast as a puppet seems wonderfully plausible.

Though details are still extremely scarce for the MTG movie, the casting of Maya Hawke represents a big step forward. Not only does this confirm that the project is properly underway, but it speaks to the budget and star power behind it, both of which are major factors when it comes to its success.

Given how many times the MTG animated series has been cancelled and subsequently revived, players understandably don’t have a ton of faith in Wizards’ ability to see this kind of project through. If they can keep up the momentum from today and deliver a strong first movie in their promised “MTG Cinematic Universe,” the tables could very well turn soon.
