Major MTG Announcement Coming This Week Promises Exciting Changes

During last week’s WeeklyMTG, a few of Streets of New Capenna cards were previewed, especially for commander! While those are very exciting reveals, there is a lot more to come. Now I’m not talking about more commander cards, though those are coming this week. Blake mentioned at the end of the stream that this coming week’s WeeklyMTG promises some awesome announcements.

WeeklyMTG

The upcoming WeeklyMTG is designated as the “News Announcement” day stream. Basically, Blake will be touching up a variety of topics during that stream. There are 3 main topics that are going to be discussed on Thursday.

Digital Organized Play

Similar to the highly anticipated Paper Organized Play announcement detailing the tabletop path to the Pro Tour, digital play will also be a part of this path to pro! We’ve known that this announcement was coming for a few weeks, but we didn’t know exactly when until now.

What we’d expect from this announcement is that there will be an MTGO event series structure that feeds into the Pro Tour. From the Arena side, it’s entirely possible that a new event mode is added that gets you into the Pro Tour, but more than likely, the Arena Opens and Mythic Invitational Qualifiers will have some play into the Pro Tour circuit. This is a very big announcement since this completes the revived Organized Play program.

“Ways to Play Arena”

The second topic that we have on the docket is “ways to play Arena”. This could mean a few things. It could mean that Magic: Arena is going to be a available to play on a new platform. This would most likely mean that it could become available on Xbox and Playstation. It’s definitely possible, but what I’d anticipate is that “Ways” means an announcement of a new format on Arena!

We know that there’s a new “Pioneer Lite” format that is going to be making it’s way to the game in the next month or so. We also know that this week’s Midweek Magic is going to be “What Was Written”. This format is one that includes all Standard Legal Printed cards from Return to Ravnica and forward. This is effectively “Pioneer Lite”, and considering that the announcement is on the last day of the event, it would be the perfect time to announce the new format.

CommandFest Returns!

The last noted topic that will be discussed is the return of CommandFest! For anyone who isn’t aware of what CommandFest is, it’s an official WotC event. It’s a multi-day gathering that’s all dedicated to Commander! There’s a ton of events to participate in and a bunch of open play areas to play Commander!

Unfortunately, there were only a handful of these events that actually happened before it was put on hiatus due to the Covid-19 pandemic. If you haven’t made it out to one of these, DEFINITELY try to make it out! More details around upcoming CommandFests so be sure stay tuned as we’ll be bringing you all the juicy details!
