Casting a Magic: The Gathering Nativity Play

Article at a Glance

Listen, we here at MTG Rocks only address the most pressing and important issues within the Magic: The Gathering community. One such issue that we can’t get out of our heads is who would be cast in a Planeswalker-only MTG Nativity…

This is serious business. There are only limited roles in a traditional Nativity play meaning we have far too many Planeswalkers in contention. Naturally, we won’t be casting baby Jesus as there are no baby Planeswalkers and it would be too farfetched to cast anyone else.

So, what roles are up for grabs and who made the cut? Let’s take a look…

Ajani, Stregnth of the Pride – The Donkey

We start off with possibly the smallest roles but an incredibly important one nonetheless. The role of the Donkey is to transport a heavily pregnant Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem. We only see one Planeswalker fit for the job and the reasoning is right there in his name. Ajani, Strength of the Pride has all the characteristics to truly own the role of the Donkey in our MTG Nativity.

Ugin, the Spirit Dragon – The Angel

Controversial? Perhaps. Ugin, the Spirit Dragon was battling it out with Elspeth for the role of the Angel and won out purely on the basis that in the MTG universe, it would be hilarious to see Ugin deliver the news of Mary’s pregnancy. Something tells me the news would seem a bit more foreboding than joyful coming from a giant dragon.

Chandra, Torch of Defiance – The North Star

This one was obvious to us. Who could own the role of floating in the sky shining bright and guiding the way for Mary & Joseph? Chandra, Torch of Defiance nailed the audition and got cast immediately. Unfortunately, she won’t be able to put too much of her personality into the role, but the audience will forever remember the spectacle for years to come.

Teferi, Time Raveler – Wise Man / King #1

Teferi, Time Raveler did initially audition for the role of Joseph but was seen as a better fit for the Wise Man / King role. He’s a consummate professional and is getting on with the job with minimum fuss. We can’t think of anyone more fitting for the role meaning he at least gets the honour of being #1 among the group.

Basri, Devoted Paladin – Wise Man – King #2

Basri, Devoted Paladin may be one of the younger Planeswalkers in MTG History but his place in the Nativity is still well earned. It also helps that his magic takes the form of sand which should make crossing the desert a much easier task. God forbid the Wise Men show up late to the party after all.

Jace, Ingenious Mind-Mage – Wise Man / King #3

Another cast member who originally auditioned for another role… well, multiple roles actually, Jace, Ingenious Mind-Mage fancied himself as both the North Star and Angel before settling into the Wise Man mantle. Safe to say it’s his sheer determination that landed him the role, or perhaps the casting team just didn’t want to disappoint him after two previous rejections.

Liliana of the Veil – Mary

Full disclosure, Liliana of the Veil was actually at the bottom of the list when it came to casting Mary but we were suspiciously unable to reach any of the other Planeswalkers who auditioned… Wierd. Anyway, despite the possible foul play involved, we’ve decided to give the role to Liliana for her talent and not because we fear what will happen if we don’t.

Sorin, the Mirthless – Joseph

We can’t actually remember much about Sorin, the Mirthless’ audition, we just got caught up staring into those dreamy eyes. It also helps that he looks a little like Geralt of Rivia (who should totally be a Planeswalker is a future crossover btw). Just, no one tell Teferi why he lost out…
