Do you just absolutely love turning your creatures sideways? Are you far more interested in having everyone else do the thinking as you bask in the glory of your own might?
Well, we’ve got good news for you, there are plenty of commanders who are basically made for people like you. We’ve decided to talk about one, and they’re pretty famous in the world of Dungeons & Dragons.
Meet your commander
Wulfgar of Icewind Dale is a five-mana red and green 4/4 with melee, which means it gets +1/+1 for each opponent you’re attacking as you’re attacking, until the end of the turn. They also read, “If a creature you control attacking would cause a triggered ability of a permanent you control to trigger, that ability triggers an additional time.”
Melee is, obviously, one of those abilities, but there are so many incredible attack triggers we can use to bolster Wulfgar that it’d be silly not to take a good look at them, if only to help you build your favorite deck. Or, at the very least, the deck that’s perfect for when you can’t be bothered to think too much, which happens to all of us at some point.
We’re not going to be doing fancy stuff here, we’re just going to be hitting things as hard and as often as possible. Are you ready?

There are a few different categories of attack triggers, but as we’re going for aggro here, it’s always worth looking at those kinds of cards specifically. Kalonian Hydra is a five-mana green 0/0 that comes in with four +1/+1 counters which double when it attacks. That means they double twice when it attacks now. Also, it has trample.
You’ve then got Ilharg, the Raze-Boar, who will allow you to put in creatures tapped and attacking when it attacks, which is nice. We also really like both Cultivator of Blades and Pathbreaker Ibex, both of which give you other attacking creatures a huge power and toughness boost when they attack, and can basically win a game just by attacking once.
Finally, everything costs mana, so why not make sure you also gain extra mana for just attacking too? If you put in Savage Ventmaw and Goldspan Dragon, you’ll basically never have mana troubles again, and all you need to do is attack with them.

Best support cards for Wulfgar
Let’s start with the power package, which is what we’re calling this. Beastmaster Ascension is a three-mana enchantment that’ll make all of your creatures bigger, which is obviously a good thing. You’ve then got Gratuitous Violence, which makes it so that all creatures deal double damage to everything they hit. Berserkers’ Onslaught is another enchantment, but this one gives all of your attacking creatures double strike. Finally, Dolmen Gate prevents all combat damage that would be dealt to your attacking creatures.
You’re going to have problems with card draw in Gruul colors, which is why we recommend both Guardian Project and The Great Henge. Both of these let you draw cards, and while The Great Henge is incredibly pricey, if you happen to have one it’s absolutely monstrous.
Finally, Aggravated Assault is one of multiple cards that allow you to take extra combat steps. As the aim here is to turn your creatures sideways as often as is possible, it’s an absolutely essential card that’s going to help you completely decimate your friends, foes, and everyone else with an alarming degree of success.
