Adventures in the Forgotten Realms is the next MTG set designed for Standard. It’s a bit different to what we’ve come to expect from Magic: The Gathering because it also happens to be the first proper crossover set.
That’s right, Adventures in the Forgotten Realms is a grand meeting of both Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons, and although we’ve only seen a handful of spoilers so far, we’re already rather excited for it. So, here’s everything you need to know about Adventures in the Forgotten Realms.

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms release date
As ever, the release dates can feel a little confusing nowadays with so many different ways to play. So, Adventures in the Forgotten Realms previews begin properly on June 29th, which is next week, which is really exciting.
The Adventures in the Forgotten Realms release date on MTG Arena and Magic Online is July 8th, pre-release is 16-22, and the final in paper Adventures in the Forgotten Realms release date is July 23rd. So, we’re about a month away from all having our hands on this cool set.

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms mechanics
Aside from the inclusion of classic D&D characters like Drizzt Do’Urden and Tiamat, we’re not certain what mechanics to expect out of Adventures in Forgotten Realms. We do know that there’s going to be a focus on storytelling in the set, and that means things like the Basic Lands all contain “a prompt for an adventure.”
It’ll be interesting to see how this ties into deck construction or even how the games can possibly play out. We’re mostly expecting it to be something along the lines of an extra meta game alongside normal MTG play, but it’s still a very cool idea, and we’re excited to see the set spoiled soon.

Adventures in the Forgotten Realms themes
We’re almost 100% certain that the themes here will include both dungeons and also dragons. Aside from being D&D, we’re expecting to see lots of support for some of the big tribes like Dragons and Elves alongside some lesser-covered tribes like Dwarves, and even the introduction of Halflings.
We’d imagine there’s going to be a few stories within the set, especially as we already know that what happens in Forgotten Realms stays in the Forgotten Realms. The previews we have so far show off a wide range of different things, including some fairly powerful bits of removal, an Equipment card, a card that supports Equipment, and the ever-so-creepy Lolth, Spider Queen.
We also know that we’re getting another four Commander decks too called Aura of Courage, Dungeons of Death, Draconic Rage, and Planar Portal. So, it’s going to be an interesting set for sure, although we’ll have to see what else gets previewed before we make a judgement on whether or not that’s a good thing. It’s hard not to get our hopes up after how cool Modern Horizons 2 was though, because we’re really hoping Wizards can keep up that momentum and deliver a truly unique crossover set.
