The MTG Marketplace: Biggest Winners, Losers and Trends of 11/08/2021

Article at a Glance

This week, the approach of Innistrad: Crimson Vow is making waves in the market. An old Commander archetype is getting new love. A 23-year-old uncommon card saw a gigantic price spike. And an MH2 rare is on the rise.

Welcome to The MTG Marketplace, a weekly article on MTG Rocks where we cover each week’s biggest price spikes and overall market trends.

Weekly Winners

Quest for Ula’s Temple & Serpent of Yawning Depths

There’s one reason why both of these cards are going up in value: Runo Stromkirk/Krothuss, Lord of the Deep. Runo, or rather, Krothuss, is the perfect sea serpent commander for players who want to school their opponents with schools of freakishly large fish.

Quest for Ula’s Temple helps mitigate the major mana costs of most sea creatures in Magic: the Gathering. Ula’s Temple gets around this by allowing you to put a Kraken, Leviathan, Octupus, or Serpent from your hand directly onto the battlefield. For this effect to be repeatable on a one mana enchantment is absolutely absurd. Thus, the card jumped from $4.00 to $10.00 this week.

Serpent of Yawning Depths is also seeing market movement. This card was exclusive to theme boosters of Theros: Beyond Death and was about $4.00. But since Runo was spoiled, the sleepy serpent has crept up to about $7.00.

If you’re interested in other sea creatures that could go up in price, or if you think you might want to play Runo in Commander, then I’d check out my article, Best Cards to Buy For Runo Stromkirk in Commander.

Planar Void

You may not have heard of this card. I had not. But it crossed my radar this week when it spiked from $1.00 to $7.00. There’s a new commander out of Crimson Vow named Umbris, Fear Manifest, who grows to out-of-control powers based on the number of cards your opponents own in exile.

Planar Void is kind of like a black Rest in Peace which exiles any card that that is put into a graveyard, making this a staple of any Umbris deck.

Esper Sentinel

Esper Sentinel has been trending upwards in price. It was $12.00-$15.00 for a long time after MH2’s release, but today it is about $17.00+. There are two reasons for this.

Esper Sentinel has been getting more spotlight in the Modern metagame. Its most notable role is in Hammer Time, one of the format’s current best decks. But Sentinel is also seeing play in tons of ‘fringe’ decks like Death & Taxes, Boros Midrange, Jeskai Humans, and new brews with Oswald Fiddlebender.

In Commander, Sentinel serves as white’s Mystic Remora, taxing all of your opponents on every noncreature spell they play, lest they let you draw a card. If you’re playing white in Commander, you’ll likely want to be playing Esper Sentinel.

Weekly Losers

Crimson Vow Preorder Prices

As we approach the official release of Crimson Vow, single prices of cars in the new set will drift downwards. Prices in the preorder window are typically inflated by hype and low supply. If you have your eye on Crimson Vow singles, I’d advise being patient and waiting for November 19th when the set releases. Prices will be much better on release weekend.
