Magic: The Gathering fans thought they’d have to wait until this Thursday for new Strixhaven: School of Mages previews. But people logging onto Twitter this morning got a pleasant surprise in the form of two awesome early spoilers! Thanks to Sean “day9” Plott and legendary hard-man Danny Trejo, we now know who two of the set’s Planeswalkers are. You can check out these two new Planeswalkers and all the other revealed cards from the new set in our spoiler section.
Kasmina, Enigma Sage
First up, Sean Plott revealed Kasmina, Enigma Sage, a Blue-Green Planeswalker with mana value three.
We first saw this Blue-aligned character as Kasmina, Enigmatic Mentor in War of the Spark. Thanks to this new card reveal, we know that the people Kasmina mentors are the students of Strixhaven: School of Mages.
Based on her new card’s Simic color identity, we can assume that she is an important figure in the hierarchy of the Quandrix college. Quandrix is the school of mathematical magic. We see this lore detail reinforced in her ability to create Fractal token creatures. Her first ability also implies that she takes a keen interest in educating other Planeswalkers, like Rowan and Will Kenrith, perhaps?
Her ultimate evokes the image of her bringing the best out of her students. All in all, Kasmina, Enigma Mentor is a flavor home run and an interesting card that might become an interesting tool for “superfriends” style decks in multiple formats.
The second Strixhaven: School of Mages Planeswalker revealed today is a new Liliana card in the form of Professor Onyx.
This card is much more expensive than Kasmina with a mana value of six, but the Professor more than makes up for it with four powerful abilities. Interestingly, this reveal is a two-for-one, since we’re also seeing the new mechanic Magecraft for the first time! Professor Onyx takes advantage of instants and sorceries being cast or copied to gain two life and take two points off each opponent’s life total. Her other four abilities all look to be strong assets in a more controlling Black deck.
From a lore perspective, it’s going to be interesting to learn how Liliana came to be on the plane where Strixhaven: School of Mages takes place, and with a new identity. It makes sense that she would seek out some peace and quiet after what happened during the events of War of the Spark.
Finally, we’re able to cross one of the teasers Mark Rosewater dropped about the set off our list. Professor Onyx is almost certainly the card he referred to when he mentioned: “a planeswalker you know, but not as you know them.”
Both these new cards look to be fun additions to Magic: The Gathering growing pool of Planeswalkers. We can’t wait for more cards to be revealed starting March 25!
