Article at a Glance

Wizards recently released a new survey, powered by Quantic Foundry, for players who want to provide feedback to take. It is a tad bit long, so committing the time can be a bit tedious without knowing what you’re getting into. Fortunately, we have broken down some of the most noteworthy things within these questions that you could have the opportunity to give feedback on. The most exciting part is that it looks like Wizards of the Coast is considering some of the most commonly received community feedback!

Too Many Set Releases?

This survey, posted to Reddit by the user WOTC_CommunityTeam, had this interesting question posed as number 24 out of 68. Here, they are explicitly asking for community feedback regarding whether too many Standard-legal, Masters, or other sets are being released yearly. This question resonates with a major issue brought up recently in the Bank of America’s analysis of Hasbro’s stock, where they claim that Hasbro is destroying the game of Magic: the Gathering for short-term profits. Part of the reason behind this is the overprinting of sets. As a result, if you’re one of the many passionate community members who want this to change, I highly recommend taking this survey. A link to it will be left at the end of the article.

Traveling Back to Favored Planes

Are you interested in seeing the return of your favorite MTG plane in a future set? This questionnaire also allows MTG players to speak out about what their favorite plane is. Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, according to Mark Rosewater, was the hit set of the year in terms of numbers, making the return of past planes a lot more likely. Some of these planes, like Ixalan and Eldraine are already slated in for a return, but others like Ikoria, Shadowmoor and Archaivos have yet to be decided. While I personally hope we see Ikoria again sometime soon, getting as much player opinion as possible should open up the likelihood of a hit set in the coming future.

Potential Universes Beyond Crossovers?

There was a more significant portion of this questionnaire near the end that asked users about what other games they are currently, and were previously, playing. Some of these are already known Universes Beyond IPs, like Fortnite and the upcoming Final Fantasy Secret Lair. If there is a specific IP on this list you want to show up in a Universes Beyond product, this could be a good chance to push for it. Some Redditors did express their concerns about this portion of the survey:

“Was anyone else worried when they asked if you play X video game? I feel like it’s a strong signal of what UB content they’re possibly considering (in some cases, obviously pokemon is on there and Fortnite already has it’s SL)” – 9mmlove

“Yep. I was also thinking that maybe it was about what kind of playerbase they have.

Like they had other digital CCGs, and paper TCGs, so maybe they were checking if their players were interested in other card games, and which were their competitors.

But all the questions about arena shooters, and Assassin’s Creed felt like WOTC was feeling out which IPs were worth crossovers” – LoreLord24

Interestingly, many of MTG Arena’s primary competitors in the Digital Card Game spaceshow up on this list of games. Additionally, these questions are follow-ups to the one pictured above. Skeleton Key, a new Wizards of the Coast game development studio, was recently announced back in July. Maybe this will be the direction for a new MTG digital platform for Arena?

What do You Like About Magic?

Is there something about how the game is being played or delivered that you disagree with? Some extensive questions on the back half of this survey inquire about what makes each MTG fan tick. Want the game to have an easier barrier-to-entry? How about including more opportunities for ‘gotcha’ moments that shock your opponents? If you have a strong opinion about something in this category, make your voice heard!

Player Opinion

The Reddit post where this survey was dropped instantly received much feedback. The majority of which surrounded how awkwardly long this survey is for most players:

“Question 52 (this is too many questions, by the way), which is about the ages of people I have taught to play Magic, asks me to “choose all the apply” but will only let me select one option.” – Imnimo

“Thanks for the heads up, because 52 questions is indeed ridiculous for a survey if they actually want people to do it for free lol” – steamhands

“It’s 68 questions long, I was always taught in stats to max a free survey at no more than 10 minutes and that even that’s pushing it. Really gotta wonder who’s designing these things.” – benpaco

“Here’s some feedback for you: That survey is way too long.” – jakemoney3

When discussing general feedback from the MTG Reddit community on this survey itself, the following comment seems to summarize it best:

“A couple of thoughts after taking the survey:

  • It is too long. There is no reason for a survey of this type to be over 50 questions.
  • Too many questions relating to spending and money, which don’t feel appropriate when being billed (via Reddit) as a survey about why we play magic
  • Similar to above the questions about income, others in the house hold, and people who we’ve taught felt out of place

Overall, the survey feels more like a ‘how much money do you spend on magic and how many people can you get involved in magic’ than a survey about what we like about Magic.” – Dusk007

There are a lot of questions in this survey relating to how much you’ve spent on MTG in the past six months and how others in your household have a relationship with the game. The feel behind these questions did seem different from the rest of the survey, that appears to be trying to decide where to go with MTG next, especially after it’s gone viral for a reason that some may not have expected.

What is Your Feedback?

As pointed out by some Redditors, there are opportunities for you to leave your custom feedback with Wizards of the Coast. This question, with the expandable text box, is an example of where you can make sure the community team hears your voice. We have no idea what they do with that information, but it does at least give you an opportunity to speak to Wizards of the Coast directly. Some Redditors recommend leaving your thoughts after the section that asks you how likely you are to recommend the game to others:

“One of the questions asks “how likely are you to recommend the game to others?” and them gives you a space to explain your answer. That’s a good spot to say your piece, especially if you frame it around why you gave that question a low number.” – Eldon_of_Hyrule

Past this point, some Redditors list what they put as their responses. Either way, if any of the above interests you, be sure to take a look at Wizards of the Coast’s MTG survey before they stop taking entries, which tends to happen sooner than you may expect.
