New Secret Lair and Ultimate Edition drop coming soon?
Article at a Glance

Although we’ve just had Strixhaven: School of Mages and Commander (2021 Edition) spoilers, there more cards coming through a suspected Secret Lair drop (or two) later this year.

If you’ve missed the spoilers so far, you can catch up with our dedicated preview gallery.

Mystical Archive Secret Lair Incoming?

Found in Magic Online client after the Strixhaven: School of Mages update, it looks like Wizards of the Coast aren’t quite done with the Mystical Archive cards. All is Dust, Artifact Mutation, Drown in the Loch, Fire Covenant, Fractured Identity, and Fracturing Gust are what WotC settled on to release as a Secret Lair drop soon.

In addition to the main set, Strixhaven: School of Mages will feature 63 Mystical Archive cards which are alternative-art reprints of Magic’s most iconic instants and sorceries. They’ve generated plenty of chatter with players as these Mystical Archive cards will be legal in MTG Arena’s Historic format. Granted, a few of these cards will be illegal upon release but they’re sure to shake up Historic in a meaningful way.

The biggest surprise from this leak is Fractured Identity, a card that has only seen a print in Commander (2017 Edition) and has no foil variant available. If the suspected Secret Lair drop is correct, then it will give players the option to acquire a foil for their Commander decks and Cubes.

All Is Dust is sure to pique the interest of Modern Eldrazi Tron and Mono-Green Tron players with that fantastic Emrakul art. Drown in the Loch sees heavy play in Standard and Modern as it does so much for so little mana, which is unfortunately a regular thing with Throne of Eldraine cards.

Secret Lair Ultimate Edition 3 Leaked?

But wait, there’s more! Again, found in the Magic Online client was a set of unique art shock lands which suggests we may see another Secret Lair drop soon. Given the number of shock lands there are, this could be another Ultimate Edition in a similar vein to the pathway and fetch lands before it.

It looks like these versions highlight the various planes in Magic: The Gathering given the Nicol Bolas iconography in the Godless Shrine art. Going further, these are artists who worked on these gorgeous-looking lands.

  • Blood Crypt: Seb McKinnon
  • Breeding Pool: Aleksi Briclot
  • Godless Shrine: Alayna Danner
  • Hallowed Fountain: Ruxing Gao
  • Overgrown Tomb: Adam Paquette
  • Sacred Foundry: Magali Villeneuve
  • Steam Vents: John Avon
  • Stomping Ground: Daarken
  • Temple Garden: Tyler Jacobsen
  • Watery Grave: Victor Adame Minguez

Hopefully, we’ll hear more soon if these are indeed Secret Lair drops or just fancy new Magic Online promos. We’ll provide any updates once we have them.
