Newly Revealed Promos Feature Insanely Expensive Alternate LOTR Art!

With Wilds of Eldraine releasing soon, there’s a lot to look forward to. Beyond just the flavorful contents of the set itself, there are lots of different events to participate in with chances to win cool prizes. From the upcoming Wilds of Eldraine prereleases this weekend to Store Championships starting later in the month, you will have tons of opportunities to test out these new and exciting cards.

In addition to simply participating in these events, there are plenty of chances to walk away with bonus promotional cards. Lots of new promo cards have just recently been revealed, along with information about how to obtain them. Certain promo cards are associated with different events, so it can be tough to keep track of when and where you can get access to specific cards. Luckily, we’ve got you covered. While information regarding promos for the series of upcoming Regional Championship Qualifiers and Commandfests has already been covered, we’ve got a bunch more promos to go over. Without further ado, let’s start with some promo cards that you can potentially walk away with at your local prerelease.

30th Anniversary

These promo cards are typically given out by WPN retailers as a celebration of MTG’s 30th anniversary. From 2022 to 2024, these 30th anniversary promos will be featured in a total of eight prereleases. Each card is designed to celebrate a specific year of MTG. For the Wilds of Eldraine prerelease, Hornet Queen represents 2011, Harvester of Souls showcases 2012, and Goblin Rabblemaster is associated with 2014. Notably, Hornet Queen is only available in French worldwide.

Last but not least, the final 30th anniversary promo at the Wilds of Eldraine prerelease is none other than Kalonian Hydra. Kalonian Hydra in particular is rarer than the other three promos, and as such, your local retailers may have their own special way of rewarding them in their limited supply. While Kalonian Hydra is a cool card and currently sits at around $5 according to Tcgplayer market price, it is noticeably cheaper and less iconic than Tarmogoyf, one of the rarer promos from the Lord of the Rings prereleases. As such, this round of 30th anniversary promos is a bit more disappointing than previous iterations.

Open House

Next up, we have some promos that can be picked up at Open House events September 8-10. Open House events provide a calm and casual environment for players to learn the game of MTG or teach others all the wonders that this beloved game has to offer. Anyone who uses a Wizards Account to sign up and play in one of these events will automatically receive the Drown in the Loch promo shown above.

Additionally, if you bring a friend to one of these events, you and your friend will both get a copy of the Cultivate promo shown above. Consider this a nice little bonus for coming out and familiarizing yourself with the world of Magic.

Commander Party

Between September 15-17, tons of local game store will be hosting an event known as a Commander Party. Commander Parties began back in 2022 alongside Innistrad: Double Feature. The goal of these events is to put a unique spin on EDH games. Players only need a Commander deck in order to participate in one of these events. From there, players are split into pods. Each player receives a card, assigning them to a particular faction. At certain times during the event, the players with the most of a specific resource, such as life or mana, will each raise their faction cards in the air. Then, the faction with the most cards raised moves forward on a game board.

Commander Party events add interesting and unusual elements to traditional Commander games. For anyone who participates in these change-of-pace events, you will receive a Syr Konrad, the Grim promo. WPN Premium stores will give out foil copies, while normal WPN stores will hand out non-foil copies.

Store Championship

From September 30-October 8, local game stores all over the world will be running Store Championships. Stores can either use Standard Constructed or Limited as their formats of choice, lining up with the formats for the Magic World Championship. Each Store Championship features three specific promos. For participating in the event, you will receive a Tail Swipe promo while supplies last. If you make top eight, you will also get a traditional foil copy of Transcendent Message.

Finally, for those who emerge victorious, you will walk away with a gorgeous textless foil version of Moonshaker Cavalry. Moonshaker Cavalry is an excellent Commander card and is currently the second most expensive card in the whole set, making it an excellent promo option.

Regional Championships: Round One

Finally, we have the Regional Championship promos. The path to the Regional Championship is simple. Be a top finisher at a Regional Championship Qualifier and you will earn your ticket to the Regional Championship. Beyond playing for money, glory, and a spot at the Pro Tour, each participant will get a non-foil Ugin, the Spirit Dragon promo. Ugin currently sits at over $20 in its cheapest form according to TCGplayer market price.

If you go above and beyond and end as one of the top finishers at the Regional Championship, you get two more promos! First, you will get a traditional foil version of the Ugin, the Spirit Dragon promo. In addition, you will also get a bonus promo of Sauron, the Dark Lord. Previous Lord of the Rings Pro Tour promotional card Gandalf, the White has sales passing $1000 already, so there is some serious financial potential here.

As you can see, there are tons of chances to earn various promo cards through Wilds of Eldraine events. Starting as soon as this weekend at your local prerelease, you may just be able to walk away with a nice little bonus.
