The Secret Lair product line has been getting a bit of a bad rap recently. Following the Marvel Superdrop crashing, being exploited, and selling out in five hours, many players are understandably miffed. While there’s no denying there have been problems recently, it’s hard not to get excited when a new Secret Lair drop is teased.
Out of the blue, we have seen exactly that today as a new Secret Lair drop has unexpectedly appeared online. Details are scarce at the moment, but it seems we’ll be getting a new Secret Lair Commander deck sooner rather than later! Dubbed “20 Ways to Win” it sounds like this is going to be rather unique, to say the least.
Secret Lair Commander Deck: 20 Ways to Win
The 20 Ways to Win Commander deck has appeared on the Secret Lair website. Saying it has appeared, however, is being rather generous, since only somewhat vague marketing material has been revealed thus far. Visible at the top and bottom of the storefront, we only really know this new deck is “coming soon.”
While Wizards is hardly being forthcoming about this new Commander deck right now, we’ve already seen three cards from it. In the banner art for the Secret Lair, reprints of Go-Shintai of Life’s Origin and Sol Ring can be seen. A reprint of Approach of the Second Sun has also just been spoiled for good measure too. Sadly, these reprints don’t tell us much about the deck’s construction or major themes.
Should Go-Shintai be the deck’s primary Commander, then it’s sensible to expect a Shrine Typal theme running throughout. On top of this, the deck will presumably have 19 other win conditions, to live up to its namesake. Even if Go-Shintai isn’t the face Commander, this spoiler shows the is five-color at least, which is hugely exciting.
A Mystery Solved
Thankfully, it seems Wizards of the Coast isn’t going to keep us in the dark about this new Commander deck for long. On Twitter, Wizards has already stated that previews for the 20 Ways to Win deck “begin today.” Exactly how long the spoiler season for this deck will last is unclear, but we should know more soon.
Once we know more and the sale of this deck approaches, we can only hope that Wizards gets it right this time. The Marvel Superdrop showcased just how bad Secret Lair drops can be, and Wizards shouldn’t repeat those mistakes. Sadly, the timing of this sale may be too soon to increase print volume, patch exploits, and increase server capacity.
Even if the 20 Ways to Win Commander deck isn’t as popular as the Marvel Superdrop, this deck is bound to sell out. Secret Lair Commander decks have historically been incredibly popular, and there’s no reason this one would be different. Unless Wizards quickly implements the hybrid printing model we’ve been wanting, it’ll once again be a rush to checkout.
The Wait Begins
Sadly, there’s no telling exactly when the Secret Lair Commander Deck: 20 Ways to Win will go on sale. Given we’re meant to be seeing previews starting today, however, it may not be long before we know more. Potentially, we could hear all about this new Commander deck in the next Weekly MTG, but for that, we’ll have to wait and see.
