While it originally appeared that the MTG X Marvel Secret Lair would sell out in record time, recent developments suggest that no records will be broken for a totally different reason. The popularity of the MTG X Marvel Secret Lair was so unprecedented that the entire site crashed.
Secret Lair Down
While MTG X Marvel may not be selling out in record time, it is unquestionably the most popular Secret Lair that MTG has ever seen. Completing your order just five seconds after the sale went live put you in a line that lasted over an hour. Just six minutes after the MTG X Marvel Secret Lair sale went live, the hour-long lineup was paused.
It appears that the Secret Lair site is currently experiencing technical issues. While promises are made to get the process moving as quickly as possible, it has been suggested to follow the Secret Lair brand on X for updates. Ten minutes after the crash was initially announced to customers in line, the official Secret Lair X page posted this:
"We’re currently experiencing a technical issue and are working to restore the site as soon as possible. The Secret Lair store queue is currently paused"Secret Lair on X
Over 300 comments flooded the post in mere minutes. Similarly, the previous post promoting the sale before its kickoff was also flooded with screenshots of the paused lineup.
A Scalper’s Paradise
Following the announcement, it was quickly made clear that players were not at all surprised about the downtime. It was made apparent that the demand for this product was expected to break records. It was even mentioned during the Hasbro Investor Meeting that they expected the MTG X Marvel Secret Lair to sell out quickly. Multiple calls to action demanding Wizards ‘do better’ can be found in the comments.
Many comments are concerned that this ‘crash’ will only help to elevate the level of perceived scarcity behind the MTG X Marvel release. This could push secondary market sales even higher, creating a massive allure for scalpers trying to flip the product:
“Print. To. Demand. Don’t let scalper bots break your website and frustrate your community.”
Broolex
Comments asking Wizards of the Coast to print this Secret Lair to demand are incredibly abundant. If players had more time to purchase this product containing mechanically unique cards, a massive crash occurring at the beginning of the sales period would be a lot less likely to happen. 12:00 PM EST, or 9:00 AM PST is not exactly the most accessible time period for the average working person, either. Some people may have to leave their computers since the sales period is taking too long:
“Reschedule the drop man ppl dont have time to wait for this”
Kyylecooke
Lineup Restored
The Secret Lair lineup was restored a half hour after the initial sale began, meaning the crash slowed down the MTG X Marvel Secret Lair sale by half an hour. Players who made their purchases seconds after the sale went live still need to wait over an hour in order to successfully check out. There’s also no guarantee that players waiting in line will acquire the MTG X Marvel product successfully.
Secret Lairs are bound to start selling out soon. We’ll be sure to keep you up-to-date on the situation.
