For the most part, the MagicCon: Amsterdam Preview Panel contained what MTG players expected. We got a fresh taste of Reality Fracture and all of the 2027 Magic Multiverse sets, as previously announced. The reveal of Mystery Booster Commander Edition, however, is a total surprise, and a very welcome one, too.
Releasing in 2026, this unexpected set evens out the controversial Universes Beyond to Universes Within balance. While this is great news for some, it does oddly fly in the face of Wizards’ attempt to slow down the MTG set release calendar. Despite this, it’s hard not to be excited about this new set, especially since it’s arrived alongside a pair of spoilers.
MTG Tolabow, Lock Rascal
While some level of novelty is expected from a Mystery Booster product, Tolabow, Lock Rascal really pushes the boat out. Featuring an aptly named rule-breaking ability, Tolabow lets you break out of its mono-blue color identity, though only for instants and sorceries.
According to Wizards, there are eight total cards in Mystery Booster Commander Edition with a Rulebreaker ability, which sounds insane. Thankfully, to mitigate any insanity, Wizards worked closely with the Commander Format Panel, so things should be somewhat balanced. Right now, it’s unclear just how deep Rulebreaker abilities will go, but it’s definitely an enticing design space.
As for Tolabow, Lock Rascal itself, this card is just fine, really. Given their power in Standard, we know how good 1/1 Otters with Prowess can be, but in Commander, it’s kind of just okay. While building a board full of otters shouldn’t be hard, casting a ton of spells each turn isn’t that easy. While this does rain on Tolabow’s parade somewhat, it should be a very fun card to build around, at least.
MTG Joven and Chandler
Offering a unique artifact-based mono-red deck, Joven and Chandler is one hell of a deep cut for MTG players. Both hailing from 1995’s Homelands, these characters are beloved by players, but they’re both basically unplayable. Now, Joven and Chandler changed that somewhat, offering a decent scaling threat and theft ability.
While Joven and Chandler sadly won’t work with the myriad artifact tokens in MTG, in a mono-red artifact deck, it can still do work. Exploiting artifact creatures, reanimation abilities, and sacrifice effects, it’s easy to see how you can build around these two. Sadly, it’s unclear how easy that’ll be to do in Mystery Booster Commander Edition itself, which uses the Commander Draft format.
Even if it’s not the best card in the set, it’s a true delight to see Joven and Chandler. Maybe it’s just their expressions, but this card really feels like a love letter to MTG players. Given the continuous hubbub around Universes Beyond, this card and the entire set couldn’t have come at a better time.
59 New Legends
According to Wizards of the Coast, in total, Mystery Booster Commander Edition will feature 59 mechanically unique legends. On the surface, this sounds like great news, as Commander-focused legends in Commander-only sets are some of the most interesting. The trouble, however, comes with this set’s ambiguous availability.
For better or worse, this set will only be available at MagicCons, via Festival in a Box, and at Gen Con. Sadly, this means these boxes are going to be like gold dust, as Festival in a Box products sell out insanely quickly. Hopefully, Wizards will adjust print runs to compensate for this, but it’s definitely a concern.
If there is any good news, it’s that we should be seeing more of Mystery Booster Commander Edition very soon. With Gen Con taking place on July 30th, the first boxes may be in players’ hands before we know it. This may mean that we’re about to be inundated with spoilers over the coming weeks, on top of the already announced spoiler season for The Hobbit.
Ultimately, for now, we’re just going to have to wait and see what gets announced in the future. Hopefully, the barrage of spoilers, whenever that happens, won’t be too much to handle.
