MTG Reality Fracture Uncommon Creates Double Enchantment Death Combo

Share

Since Reality Fracture became tournament-legal, we’ve seen more and more unique brews emerge. Even in Eternal formats with vast card pools, these new designs are making their presence felt.

In fact, today, a Legacy shell built around two enchantment-focused infinite combos 5-0d a Magic Online League out of nowhere. This deck can win quickly and rebuild easily, making it quite intriguing.

Double the Combos, Double the Fun

This archetype piloted by Magic Online user Tsubaki556 is designed to maximize some of MTG’s most broken enchantments. The primary combo piece, Food Chain Food Chain Food Chain Exile a creature you control: Add X mana of any one color, where X is 1 plus the exiled creature's mana value. Spend this mana only to cast creature spells. , can generate infinite mana alongside Squee, the Immortal Squee, the Immortal Squee, the Immortal You may cast this card from your graveyard or from exile. . By sacrificing Squee to Food Chain and casting it to exile, you can create a loop, generating an extra mana each time. You can use that mana to cast Acererak, the Archlich Acererak, the Archlich Acererak, the Archlich When Acererak enters, if you haven't completed Tomb of Annihilation, return Acererak to its owner's hand and venture into the dungeon.
Whenever Acererak attacks, for each opponent, you create a 2/2 black Zombie creature token unless that player sacrifices a creature of their choice.
and Venture into the Lost Mine of Phandelver infinitely, draining your opponent of all their life.

Interestingly, Acererak also combos with Aluren Aluren Aluren Any player may cast creature spells with mana value 3 or less without paying their mana costs and as though they had flash. , another enchantment this deck utilizes nicely. While Aluren only appears as a one-of, it’s easy to tutor it or Food Chain it with Reality Fracture’s Pia, Aether Ascetic Pia, Aether Ascetic Pia, Aether Ascetic When Pia enters, you may discard a card. If you do, search your library for an enchantment card, reveal it, put it into your hand, then shuffle. , adding a ton of consistency.

To reliably grab Pia when needed, this deck abuses Green Sun’s Zenith Green Sun’s Zenith Green Sun’s Zenith Search your library for a green creature card with mana value X or less, put it onto the battlefield, then shuffle. Shuffle Green Sun's Zenith into its owner's library. , Malevolent Rumble Malevolent Rumble Malevolent Rumble Reveal the top four cards of your library. You may put a permanent card from among them into your hand. Put the rest into your graveyard. Create a 0/1 colorless Eldrazi Spawn creature token with "Sacrifice this token: Add {C}." , and Once Upon a Time Once Upon a Time Once Upon a Time If this spell is the first spell you've cast this game, you may cast it without paying its mana cost.

As consistent as this deck is, though, relying on three-mana creatures and four-mana enchantments to combo off can be a bit slow. Fortunately, Delighted Halfling Delighted Halfling Delighted Halfling {T}: Add {C}.

You can also slow the opponent down with Punishing Fire Punishing Fire Punishing Fire Punishing Fire deals 2 damage to any target.

Resilience and Utility

Despite the deck’s reliance on clunky cards, this archetype is more resilient than you might expect. Allosaurus Shepherd Allosaurus Shepherd Allosaurus Shepherd This spell can't be countered.

, which run rampant in Legacy. It’s also not impossible to win “fairly,” as tools like Aeve, Progenitor Ooze Aeve, Progenitor Ooze Aeve, Progenitor Ooze Storm (When you cast this spell, copy it for each spell cast before it this turn. Copies become tokens.)
Aeve isn't legendary if it's a token.

This plan gets even easier after sideboarding, since you can access elite, matchup-specific tutor targets. Arasta of the Endless Web Arasta of the Endless Web Arasta of the Endless Web Reach
Whenever an opponent casts an instant or sorcery spell, create a 1/2 green Spider creature token with reach.
, for example, is a complete nuisance for decks like Izzet Delver. At the same time, slower blue control decks can struggle to deal with a resolved Choke Choke Choke Islands don't untap during their controllers' untap steps. or the mana advantage Carpet of Flowers Carpet of Flowers Carpet of Flowers At the beginning of each of your main phases, if you haven't added mana with this ability this turn, you may add X mana of any one color, where X is the number of Islands target opponent controls. provides. All of this is made possible by Pia, Aether Ascetic: the ultimate toolbox.

Unfortunately, as fun as this deck is, its lack of pure speed and spell-based interaction leaves it very vulnerable to faster combo strategies. Decks like Reanimator not only threaten to goldfish faster than you, but also have plenty of discard spells to slow you down.

Ultimately, this glaring weakness makes me wary that this Food Chain combo variant will ever become a top-tier strategy. Nonetheless, it can be a decent metacall in a combo-light field, especially if other players aren’t prepared for it. So keep this deck on your radar, as it could make a splash again in the future.
