Throughout 2024, there has been no end of new reveals and content to excite players. Even the downtime after Outlaws of Thunder Junction has been filled with leaks and surprisingly major bans. Unfortunately for anyone hoping for a break after Modern Horizons 3 releases, it appears there will be no respite.
Yesterday, the first round of partners for Summer Game Fest 2024 was announced to the world. Taking the reigns from E3, this major gaming event is set to be jam-packed with reveals and announcements. With this in mind, it’s both incredibly exciting and intriguing that MTG was announced as a Summer Game Fest 2024 partner.
MTG at Summer Game Fest?!
With Summer Game Fest 2024 scheduled to take place on Friday, June 7th, there’s a chance a major MTG announcement is imminent. Potentially, this could mean the debut of a brand-new MTG game or perhaps details about the long-awaited Netflix show. Alternatively, Wizards could provide further details about Commander coming to MTG Arena sometime soon.
Sadly, without a crystal ball, we won’t know what’s getting announced until the livestream in early June. While this wait should breeze by considering what’s releasing in the meantime, I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much. As u/Copernicus1981 pointed out on Reddit, there’s a non-zero chance this announcement is nothing at all.
Last year, Wizards of the Coast brought MTG to Summer Game Fest and revealed absolutely nothing. Instead, Wizards had a booth at the event space, showcasing MTG and the Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth expansion. As was touched upon in an interview with MMORPG, this booth was mostly to entice the press and players toward the game.
With this past showing in mind, it’s unclear if Wizards will announce anything at Summer Game Fest this year. If we’re optimistic, it would be great to see a new MTG-based video game, but that seems unlikely. Ultimately, if any big announcement or game was in the works, we likely would have heard about it from Hasbro’s quarterly reports for now.
At the end of the day, we’re just going to have to wait until June 5th rolls around. Until then, thankfully Modern Horizons 3 should keep us all occupied with fantastic spoilers and reveals.
