The longest name in Magic: The Gathering finally gets a card!

Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar (“Asmor” for short), the female wizard and the great cook from Dominaria, is finally getting her first Magic: The Gathering card, and it’s coming in Modern Horizons 2, the upcoming straight-to-Modern set.

Today, Wizards of the Coast officially revealed the new Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar card, and as you can see, the 3/3 legendary Human Wizard’s color identity is red and black but it doesn’t have a mana cost, so the only way you can cast it is by paying red or black mana but only if you’ve discarded a card this turn. When it enters the battlefield, you may search your library for a card named The Underworld Cookbook, reveal it, and put it into your hand, then shuffle. Asmor also lets you sacrifice two Foods to make target creature deal 6 damage to itself.

Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar was referenced in the flavor text of the Alpha card Granite Gargoyle as part of her gastronomicon, The Underworld Cookbook

Asmor was also referenced in the flavor text of Time Spiral’s Lightning Axe and Unhinged’s Saute, but it has always been a challenge to create a card featuring her because of her lengthy name that can take up a lot of design space, but Wizards finally found a way in Modern Horizons 2.

The preview of this card confirms one of the leaked rumors shared last week.

Wizards shared some design notes about Astor:

  • You can’t cast Asmor normally, but you can sneak her into play with Aether Vial. A 3/3 on turn 1!
  • An earlier version of the card sacrificed Food to destroy target creature, but because the card was black-red hybrid, we needed the ability to be a little more red. The target deals damage to itself for practical reasons—we couldn’t fit “Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar” in the text box again. But I think it also makes some flavor sense—her food is so ghastly that it kills just about anyone who eats it . . . unless you happen to be the size of a Lord of the Pit!
  • The Underworld Cookbook is uncommon and not legendary. In the story, 20 copies were created. In Draft, the card bridges a bunch of archetypes—reanimator, tokens, madness—and we wanted to make sure that if you drafted an Asmor you had a good shot of getting a Cookbook.
  • Asmor was called a “wizard” specifically in the short story, which was fortuitous as we have a smattering of cards for Wizards tribal in the set!
