A little over half a year ago, MTG Fallout was released to the world. This product contained a quartet of preconstructed Commander decks, alongside Collector Boosters. While most of these cards were clearly designed for Commander play, a few of them were powerful enough to actually show up in Eternal formats.
Unfortunately, one platform where Legacy thrives, Magic Online, seemed unlikely to be receiving MTG Fallout additions anytime soon. After all, it took almost two years for MTG Warhammer 40k cards to make their way onto Magic Online. Issues with Universes Beyond sets that utilize IPs outside of Magic the Gathering can result in a big delay between their official paper release and being programmed on Magic Online.
Well, in a surprising announcement, it looks like MTG Fallout cards will be debuting on Magic Online starting October 16th! This is a big deal, as it means the Legacy environments on Magic Online and in paper will be more in sync. Deviations between paper and online play have long been a concern, and this is a step in the right direction. Let’s take a closer look at some of the MTG Fallout cards that are bound to have an impact in a digital space.
The Heavy Hitters
- Mana Value: 2W
- Rarity: Rare
- MTG Sets: MTG Fallout
- Card Text: When Pre-War Formalwear enters the battlefield, return target creature card with mana value 3 or less from your graveyard to the battlefield and attach Pre-War Formalwear to it. Equipped creature gets +2/+2 and has vigilance. Equip 3.
All things considered, MTG Fallout isn’t chock full of Legacy staples. Nonetheless, there are some important additions that are worth discussing. At the top of that list, we have Pre-War Formalwear. Pre-War Formalwear is a powerful Equipment with a unique enters-the-battlefield ability. In attrition battles, this can be a very useful tutor target for Stoneforge Mystic. Out of Death and Taxes shells, being able to return elite, efficient creatures like Mother of Runes from your graveyard to play is great. Plus, the +2/+2 and Vigilance bonus the Equipment provides is nothing to scoff at.
Interestingly, Pre-War Formalwear isn’t the only Fallout equipment that has some appeal to it. Pip-Boy 3000 is yet another layer that sees play. Pip-Boy 3000 isn’t exactly a Legacy staple, though it does show up from time to time. Instead, Pip-Boy 3000 primarily makes its presence felt in Duel Commander, which is now a supported format on Magic Online. You’ll often find this equipment in Satoru, the Infiltrator decks as a card to grab off of Urza’s Saga.
Outside of the realm of equipment, one of the coolest additions to Magic Online that should spark some innovation is Lumbering Megasloth. As a 12-drop, Lumbering Megasloth obviously requires some support to maximize. However, what if you could reliably cast it for two mana?
Well, with access to Dark Depths, you can! Dark Depths enters with 10 ice counters, which is the perfect number to help give Lumbering Megasloth a massive discount. As such, some Dark Depths combo enjoyers in Legacy have utilized Lumbering Megasloth as an alternate win condition. This can be useful in the face of Wasteland strategies where setting up Dark Depths+Thespian’s Stage is tough.

A Good Sign
Ultimately, every set is different, and there are bound to be variations between online and paper play. Nonetheless, it’s very nice to see Daybreak working to keep Magic Online as up to date as possible. Universes Beyond sets have become a major focus in the Magic world, so perhaps Fallout’s Magic Online release is a sign that future sets will follow suit.
With a huge Marvel crossover in the works, quick implementation of sets to Magic Online should absolutely be a priority. Once again, the turnaround time for MTG Fallout to make its way to Magic Online improved significantly compared to Warhammer 40k, and hopefully this trend continues. More information about MTG Fallout’s release on Magic Online will be made available on October 8th, so make sure to check back for full details.
