Transforming MTG Darkhold Destiny Commander Wins Games By Paying All Your Life

No pain, no gain!

Last week we got our first glimpse of Magic’s 2027 Marvel set, Darkhold Destiny, and it already looks like a banger. Not only will the set have an entirely original story, addressing one of the major criticisms of Universes Beyond, but the new cards we’ve seen from it so far look fantastic.

Magik, Illyana Rasputin, for example, is a powerful new Rakdos MDFC Commander, with a flip side that unlocks some mean combo potential.

In its initial form, Magik, Illyana Rasputin isn’t the most impressive MTG Commander. A three-mana 3/3 that impulse draws you a card each turn feels pretty rough, but fortunately there’s a fairly easy path to an upgrade. If you can sacrifice two permanents in a turn, you can flip this over into Darkchild, ahead of its typical five-mana arrival.

To do this, you have several approaches. A classic Aristocrats package is probably the most consistent, leveraging sacrifice outlets like Phyrexian Altar Phyrexian Altar Phyrexian Altar Sacrifice a creature: Add one mana of any color. and fodder creatures like Shambling Ghast Shambling Ghast Shambling Ghast When this creature dies, choose one —
• Target creature an opponent controls gets -1/-1 until end of turn.
• Create a Treasure token. (It's an artifact with "{T}, Sacrifice this token: Add one mana of any color.")
. Creatures that can sacrifice themselves for value, like Blood Pet Blood Pet Blood Pet Sacrifice this creature: Add {B}. , also help flip Magik early.

Another great option is to lean into Treasure synergies since Magik counts any permanents for its flip condition. Cast Strike it Rich Strike it Rich Strike it Rich Create a Treasure token. (It's an artifact with "{T}, Sacrifice this token: Add one mana of any color.")
Flashback {2}{R} (You may cast this card from your graveyard for its flashback cost. Then exile it.)
on turn one, for instance, then all you need is a Fetchland on turn two to flip Magik. Other Treasure generators and support pieces, like Professional Face-Breaker Professional Face-Breaker Professional Face-Breaker Menace
Whenever one or more creatures you control deal combat damage to a player, create a Treasure token.
Sacrifice a Treasure: Exile the top card of your library. You may play that card this turn.
and The Sackville-Bagginses The Sackville-Bagginses The Sackville-Bagginses When The Sackville-Bagginses enter, you may sacrifice another creature or artifact. If you do, draw a card and create a Treasure token.
Whenever you sacrifice a token, target opponent loses 1 life.
, can also enable speedy flips later, which is especially handy when Magik comes back in with Commander tax.

Once Magik becomes Darkchild, things really get going. Impulse drawing multiple cards per turn is a real possibility here, particularly with trigger doublers like Strionic Resonator Strionic Resonator Strionic Resonator {2}, {T}: Copy target triggered ability you control. You may choose new targets for the copy. (A triggered ability uses the words "when," "whenever," or "at.") in the mix. This lets you really capitalize on ‘cast from exile’ synergies, with cards like Passionate Archaeologist Passionate Archaeologist Passionate Archaeologist Commander creatures you own have "Whenever you cast a spell from exile, this creature deals damage equal to that spell's mana value to target opponent." and Spider-Verse Spider-Verse Spider-Verse The "legend rule" doesn't apply to Spiders you control.
Whenever you cast a spell from anywhere other than your hand, you may copy it. If you do, you may choose new targets for the copy. If the copy is a permanent spell, it gains haste. Do this only once each turn.
putting a serious shift in. With so many cards going into exile, payoffs like Laelia, the Blade Reforged Laelia, the Blade Reforged Laelia, the Blade Reforged Haste
Whenever Laelia attacks, exile the top card of your library. You may play that card this turn.
Whenever one or more cards are put into exile from your library and/or your graveyard, put a +1/+1 counter on Laelia.
are great inclusions here, too.

Darkchild also far surpasses Magik by virtue of its protection ability, which costs just four life to activate. This lets you essentially counter most removal and board wipes, keeping your Commander around to fight another day. It also plays very nicely alongside board wipes, letting you pay four before firing off a Blasphemous Act Blasphemous Act Blasphemous Act This spell costs {1} less to cast for each creature on the battlefield.
Blasphemous Act deals 13 damage to each creature.

Costly Combo Lines

Darkchild’s protection ability also notably lacks any ‘once per turn’ clause, so you can pay life in multiples of four to your heart’s content. While this doesn’t sound like an upside, it actually opens up a solid suite of combo lines, which give Magik a serious edge in the command zone.

First and foremost, you can abuse this ability to kill the table outright using Repay in Kind Repay in Kind Repay in Kind Each player's life total becomes the lowest life total among all players. . With something like Platinum Angel Platinum Angel Platinum Angel Flying
You can't lose the game and your opponents can't win the game.
, which prevents you from losing in play, you can pay all of your life, then cast Repay to set everyone else to zero as well, thus winning on the spot. Repay in Kind Repay in Kind Repay in Kind Each player's life total becomes the lowest life total among all players. causing an opponent’s life total to drop counts as life loss, so cards like Bloodletter of Aclazotz Bloodletter of Aclazotz Bloodletter of Aclazotz Flying
If an opponent would lose life during your turn, they lose twice that much life instead. (Damage causes loss of life.)
can also work in place of Platinum Angel Platinum Angel Platinum Angel Flying
You can't lose the game and your opponents can't win the game.
.

Notably, Darkhold Destiny is introducing a second copy of this effect in The Darkhold The Darkhold The Darkhold {T}: Put a sin counter on The Darkhold. Draw a card for each sin counter on it, then you lose 1 life for each card in your hand.
{6}{B}{B}, {T}: Each player's life total becomes the lowest life total among all players. Activate only as a sorcery.
, so there’s some decent redundancy available.

Alternatively, you can bring in Rowan, Scion of War Rowan, Scion of War Rowan, Scion of War Menace
{T}: Spells you cast this turn that are black and/or red cost {X} less to cast, where X is the amount of life you lost this turn. Activate only as a sorcery.
and convert your life into colorless mana, as you would with Channel Channel Channel Until end of turn, any time you could activate a mana ability, you may pay 1 life. If you do, add {C}. . Provided you have enough life to start with, this can let you land a lethal Exsanguinate Exsanguinate Exsanguinate Each opponent loses X life. You gain life equal to the life lost this way. , or perhaps a Torment of Hailfire Torment of Hailfire Torment of Hailfire Repeat the following process X times. Each opponent loses 3 life unless that player sacrifices a nonland permanent of their choice or discards a card. . With untappers like Thousand-Year Elixir Thousand-Year Elixir Thousand-Year Elixir You may activate abilities of creatures you control as though those creatures had haste.
{1}, {T}: Untap target creature.
in the mix, you can pull off these combos even if you’re struggling for life, too.

Finally, you can use Darkchild’s ability to exile your entire library with Ashiok, Wicked Manipulator Ashiok, Wicked Manipulator Ashiok, Wicked Manipulator If you would pay life while your library has at least that many cards in it, exile that many cards from the top of your library instead.
+1: Look at the top two cards of your library. Exile one of them and put the other into your hand.
−2: Create two 1/1 black Nightmare creature tokens with "At the beginning of combat on your turn, if a card was put into exile this turn, put a +1/+1 counter on this token."
−7: Target player exiles the top X cards of their library, where X is the total mana value of cards you own in exile.
. Once that’s done, you can use Doctor Doom, Unrivaled Doctor Doom, Unrivaled Doctor Doom, Unrivaled Lifelink
{T}: You draw a card and lose 1 life. Then if your library has no cards in it, you win the game. (You win even if you have 0 life or didn't draw a card.)
to win on the spot as soon as your library is empty. For a funkier win, bring in Laelia, the Blade Reforged Laelia, the Blade Reforged Laelia, the Blade Reforged Haste
Whenever Laelia attacks, exile the top card of your library. You may play that card this turn.
Whenever one or more cards are put into exile from your library and/or your graveyard, put a +1/+1 counter on Laelia.
, which scales to nearly 100/100 with this combo, letting you close with any Chandra’s Ignition Chandra’s Ignition Chandra’s Ignition Target creature you control deals damage equal to its power to each other creature and each opponent. effect.

Overall, Magik is a very promising new MTG Commander option, with potential both as a fair card in lower brackets and a combo menace in higher ones. If the rest of Darkhold Destiny’s legendary lineup is this good, then April 2027 really can’t come soon enough.
