Wizards Confirms Three MTG Sets Will Be Announced Next Month

Share

After a somewhat unusual spoiler season, prerelease events for Marvel Super Heroes finally kick off today. While this is always an exciting time, it seems Wizards wasn’t just content to let us enjoy this set. Alongside Marvel Super Heroes becoming legal to play, Wizards also unveiled all of the panels for MagicCon: Amsterdam.

Running from July 17th to 19th, this MagicCon will, as always, feature the latest Preview Panel from Wizards of the Coast. Judging by what has just been announced for it, this event is going to be one hell of a doozy. It’s still a smidgen under a month away, but in July, we’ll be hearing about three brand-new MTG sets.

MagicCon: Amsterdam Preview Panel

Taking place on Friday, June 17th, at 6:30 PM local time (12:30 PM EST), you won’t want to miss this Preview Panel. Even the name of it, “Reality Fracture and the Future of the Magic Multiverse”, makes the importance of this panel abundantly clear. As the name suggests, we’ll get another taste of Reality Fracture spoilers here, presumably as a second first look.

As if that wasn’t enough, Wizards will also “announce all three Magic Multiverse sets coming in 2027.” Sadly, while this is a very exciting announcement of an announcement, there’s no telling what it’ll unveil. Given that Jace is trying to reset the multiverse, the consequences from Reality Fracture could be immense if he succeeds.

With this in mind, accurately guessing the themes or locations for any of the upcoming sets is a pipe dream. Still, this hasn’t stopped MTG players on social media from predicting what they might see. Curiously, both Zhalfir and Alara have been predicted on multiple occasions, but really, it’s anyone’s guess.

Notably, while June 17th should reveal where we’re going and the names of each upcoming in-universe set, I wouldn’t expect any cards from them. Additionally, there’s no word on when we’ll be hearing anything about upcoming Universes Beyond sets for 2027 and beyond. Potentially, that might be something for MagicCon: Atlanta in November, but that remains to be seen.

Secret Lair Reveal-a-Thon

As if there wasn’t already enough to look forward to, MagicCon: Amsterdam also has a Secret Lair-focused panel. According to Wizards, this panel will unveil “upcoming drops, first looks, artist spotlights, unexpected collaborations, and a few surprises you won’t see coming.” At the very least, this makes it sound like a new Superdrop is coming not too long after MagicCon: Amsterdam.

Given that Secret Lair can do basically anything, predicting what might be unveiled here is exceptionally difficult. That being said, we have seen one Marvel-themed Secret Lair drop recently, which curiously doesn’t have a widespread release planned. In theory, this could be part of a future Marvel-themed Superdrop, which could be announced or teased here.

Alternatively, we also know that a Monster Hunter Secret Lair Superdrop is being developed, or rather redeveloped, after the first one flopped. Currently, news about this reworked Superdrop has been incredibly limited, and this seems like the perfect opportunity to announce something. That being said, there is a strong chance this could be too early, as it’s only been seven months.

As much as this might seem like a long time, typically, space at the printers is reserved at least one year in advance. Factoring in development time on top of this, not to mention double-checking with Capcom for quality, and we could easily be six months out still. Even if this much-anticipated drop doesn’t get announced, however, Wizards rarely disappoints at these Secret Lair panels.

If you want to catch it for yourself, the Secret Lair Reveal-a-Thon is on Friday, July 17th. Starting at 1:30 local time (7:30 EST), this panel is an early one, but you won’t want to miss it. Thankfully, we’ll be covering all the big reveals here, so watch this space.

While the Preview Panel is always the big exciting event of a MagicCon, Amsterdam doesn’t stop there. On Saturday, July 18th, at 5:30 PM local time (11:30 AM EST), Wizards will host the There and Back Again Panel. As the name suggests, this will be the official debut for The Hobbit MTG set, kickstarting the official spoiler season.

Technically, like the main Preview Panel, we don’t know what will be announced here, but since this is a Universes Beyond set, speculation isn’t difficult. Even as a smaller set, all of the most iconic characters from The Hobbit should appear in some capacity. Beyond this, we know we’re getting a bunch of Tales of Middle-earth reprints as box toppers, which is a welcome treat, too.
