Overlooked MTG Marvel Uncommon Legend Creates Infinite Turns

Share

Unlike any MTG set before it, every single uncommon or higher rarity creature is legendary in Marvel Super Heroes. While this gives Commander players plenty of new Commanders to try, it also means that some interesting options will likely go overlooked. Wiccan, Rising Magician, for example, gives players a surprisingly versatile ability in the Command Zone that can even go infinite.

MTG Wiccan, Rising Magician

Essentially offering a discount Displacer Kitten in the command zone, Wiccan, Rising Magician has an incredible amount of versatility. Flickering a permanent whenever you cast a non-creature spell is rather easy to use, allowing you to draw tons of cards off of entry effects like Serum Visionary. You can even cheat the downsides of Warp creatures like Quantum Riddler or Evoke creatures like Mulldrifter, keeping them around for cheap.

Thanks to this, loading your deck with entry effects makes creating value with Wiccan trivial. Whether you use Agent of Treachery to steal your opponent’s threats or Spellseeker to tutor up all your best cards, Wiccan Rising Magician can break all kinds of cards. Using Astral Dragon to copy a Panharmonicon or a Starfield Vocalist, for example, gets out of hand quickly, quadrupling your entry triggers before scaling further.

Since Wiccan triggers on any noncreature spell you cast, there’s a decent incentive to include a lot cheap artifacts. Cheap mana rocks like Sol Ring and Mox Opal can double as both ramp and a flicker, giving them versatility at every point in the game. This makes recycling cards like Mishra’s Bauble with Emry, Lurker of the Loch, particularly deadly.

Thanks to Wiccan’s flicker effect being a delayed one, you can even use your Commander offensively. Using cards like Stifle, you can counter Wiccan’s end step trigger after exiling an opponent’s permanent, preventing it from coming back into play. Consign to Memory, Summary Dismissal, and Mindbreak Trap take this idea further, removing every opposing card you’ve exiled over a turn permanently.

If that weren’t enough, Wiccan can even use turn-ending cards as repeatable removal. Sundial of the Infinite, for example, can end the turn in response to Wiccan’s delayed triggers going on the stack, essentially countering them all on repeat. This also allows the Sundial, alongside cards like Day’s Undoing, to be outright removal in and of themselves since they trigger Wiccan on cast.

Going Infinite

With similarities to some of the nastier creatures in MTG, it’s no wonder that Wiccan, Rising Magician has some infinite combos to use. The simplest of these to pull off utilizes an infinite turn spell like Time Warp in combination with Archaeomancer or Mnemonic Wall. Simply cast your extra turn spell and flicker your Archaeomancer in response. It will return on your end step, putting Time Warp back to your hand.

While Wiccan, Rising Magician has a few infinite combos to use, they all follow the same formula. The Dominion Bracelet and Karn, the Great Creator, for example, create a similar loop that allows you to take control of an opponent’s turn infinitely. The Mindslaver and Donnie & April, Adorkable Duo can pull off a similar thing.

With a healthy variety of ways to use Wiccan, this uncommon Marvel Super Heroes Commander can really catch players off guard. With many of his best synergies coming from other commons and uncommons, this could be one of the best budget options available from the new set.
