White gets a major update in Strixhaven: School of Mages
White Council of Colors Magic: The Gathering designer Ari NIeh showed up in the latest episode of Good Morning Magic! to talk about how white Magic gets a major design update in the latest set Strixhaven: School of Mages. In the video, senior Magic designer Gavin Verhey and Nieh discuss various white cards from the main Strixhaven set and Commander 2021. Many consider white to be an underpowered in Commander format, but Wizards of the Coast have listened to players’ feedback, and they have clearly buffed up white with more spells that give card advantage and mana ramp to bring more balance to the color pie.
Watch the video below:
Verhey and Nieh talk about unique Strixhaven white cards like Elite Spellbinder, Mila, Crafty Companion, Mavinda, Students Advocate, and Professor of Symbiology as well as the new white cards from Commander 2021 pre-constructed decks, like Archaeomancer’s Map and Losheel, Clockwork Scholar.

It’s exciting to see how new white cards from recent sets like Strixhaven: School of Mages provide unique ways to get card advantage while still feeling “mechanically white”. There are also some strong white cards in Strixhaven Limited that players can use in their Lorehold or Silverquill decks.
Be sure to check out the Commander 2021 decks that are available to purchase now.
