Knowledge Vault has seen an insane price jump overnight. This reserved list MTG card, worth $30 just yesterday, is beginning to demand prices in the realm of $100. A sudden price spike like this is unusual. Let’s take a look at why everyone’s freaking out over this archaic card.
Knowledge Vault
- Mana Value: 4
- Rarity: Rare
- Card Type: Artifact
- Card Text: (2) (Tap): Take a card from your library without looking at it and place it face down under Knowledge Vault. Sacrifice Knowledge Vault to discard entire hand and take the cards under the vault into your hand. If Knowledge Vault leaves play, put all cards under it in your graveyard.
Knowledge Vault is an incredibly overpriced tutor, but it can tutor multiple times. You need a total of six mana to get the process going, and you can only use Knowledge Vault once per turn. Each turn, you essentially get to tutor a card from your library, exiling it under Knowledge Vault. You can sacrifice the artifact to discard your entire hand and put the cards exiled by Knowledge Vault into your hand. For two mana, this is quite powerful.
The price spike surrounding this card is so sudden that there isn’t a ton of certainty as to why this happened. Flubs, the Fool could be a reason why Knowledge Vault is suddenly so sought-after. This bizarre cEDH-playable Commander wants your hand to be empty, which makes the secondary effect of Knowledge Vault extremely enticing. Like Gustha’s Staff, another Reserved List card that saw a price spike, Knowledge Vault can help empty your hand while keeping your best cards tucked away for the perfect moment.
Alternatively, players who want to tutor cards into their graveyard can do so in a roundabout way with Knowledge Vault. Should the card actually be destroyed, cards you tutored can go directly to the graveyard. You won’t need to discard your hand to achieve this, either.
A Weird History
Notably, this isn’t the first time that Knowledge Vault has seen a spike like this. Shortly after the release of Kaldheim in 2021, this card’s price suddenly shot up from $35 to $100. After holding this peak for a few months, the price steadily started to decline until very recently.
For better or worse, this may mean that the price of Knowledge Vault isn’t going to remain this high for very long. While Wizards won’t be printing any new supply of this reserved list card, interest will undoubtedly wane over time. When this happens, the price is bound to fall over time again since the supply massively outweighs demand.
That being said, since Knowledge Vault is a reserved list card, its price will always be incredibly volatile. Should the current demand persist, or only drop slightly, it may retain its current price. Alternatively, there’s a real chance it may spike again in the future, should another combo or synergy come along.
A Bizarre Spike
Whatever the reason for this card’s spike, TCGplayer only has a handful of listings, starting at $110. That said, the prices for this card are all across the map, which means that Knowledge Vault could be an artificially enhanced price spike by some bad actors.
Notably, Knowledge Vault being on the Reserved List means that any increase in demand for the card will cause it to explode in price. This is because the supply for this card is incredibly poor, making meeting any demand quite difficult.
Who’s to say if this card is the real deal or not? Until we know why this card is spiking, it’s tough to tell. Either way, this card looks like it could tutor the perfect cards to win a game of Magic with some untapping action, so there is certainly potential.
