The Bloomburrow MTG Box Topper was a rather weird choice. Generally, Box Toppers in MTG sets are either an exclusive Standard legal card or a special variant of an existing card available elsewhere. This time around, Wizards of the Coast has decided to make the Bloomburrow Box Topper a Commander legal exclusive, making Flubs, the Fool very difficult to get your hands on.
Flubs, the Fool saw a price spike from $8 to $22.52 over the past few weeks. While scarcity probably has an effect on this, the Commander itself is also rather popular.
Flubs, the Fool
- Mana Value: GUR
- Rarity: Mythic Rare (Box Topper)
- Stats: 0/5
- Card Text: You may play an additional land on each of your turns. Whenever you play a land or cast a spell, draw a card if you have no cards in hand. Otherwise, discard a card.
Flubs, the Fool is a bizarre Commander. You want your hand to be empty basically all the time to best utilize Flubs’ effects. If you can line this up, Flubs becomes a draw engine that ramps at the same time. Otherwise, Flubs will actively destroy your hand, which can be problematic.
It’s important to state just how big of a deal the exclusivity of this card is. Since they’re only available as the Bloomburrow Booster Box they don’t appear in any packs. Unless you can find this card as a single, your only other option is to spend $150 on a Booster Box.
Gustha’s Staff, a Reserved List card spiking heavily right now, may be increasing in price partially because of the popularity of this Commander. Removing crucial cards from your hand can help keep it empty for Flubs, while keeping the cards to use later. It can also continue the flow of card draw from Flubs if you happen to topdeck a land.
Will This Card Continue to Go Up?
It certainly seems like it. Flubs, the Fool is going to have a major supply issue. This isn’t the first time that a popular Box Topper ended up causing secondary market woes. Nexus of Fate is the worst example of this. The card totally ruled over a Standard format, and not only was only available as a Box Topper but was only available as a foil, which is not great for competitive events.
Wizards definitely learned from the ladder of these mistakes. Flubs, the Fool is available in both Traditional foil and in extended art. That said, since this is Commander-only, players may actually prefer the foil variant this time around.
Either way, Flubs, the Fool is starting to demand a serious price tag.
