Article at a Glance

One of the things that players look forward to when a new Magic: the Gathering set comes out, aside from the new cards, are the reprints. We’re always looking for what cards from times past will make their way into Standard. Looking back through the recent history, there were the occasional sweet reprints every now and again, but most of the time, the reprints were draft commons. Well no longer! We still have 1 day left in previews but Innistrad: Crimson Vow has some of the best reprints that we’ve seen in Standard in years!

Reprints

We still have some cards left to go, but here’s the reprints that we’ve gotten so far.

Wizards of the Coast

First off, one of the biggest reprints in the set is Thalia, Guardian of Thraben. This card is a staple in multiple formats, and is a dead ringer against control decks. It seems to be really well positioned in the format, as it already has a home in Mono White Aggro, but can also spawn a D&T archetype.

Wizards of the Coast

Next up, we got Hero’s Downfall making it’s way back to Standard. This is a pretty iconic removal spell, and it’s rarity was even downshifted from the first time it was printed back in Theros. This was a fan favorite back in the day and should be a great option in this current standard.

Wizards of the Coast

Third up, and one that just got previewed today is Splendid Reclamation. Originally printed in Eldritch Moon, this card didn’t see a ton of constructed play. But with the addition of the next card on this list, it’s possible that it may. Either way, this is a very cool rare to see reprinted.

Wizards of the Coast
Mulch is next on the list of reprints. We had a functional reprint of this card on Wrenn and Seven +1 ability, but now we have the actual thing. This card helped enable various graveyard strategies back in the day, and we have the ability to try and leverage it the same way this go around. This in tandem with Splendid Reclamation, we could have a cool landfall deck.

Wizards of the Coast
Valorous Stance is next and it was a great removal spell back when it was printed in Fate Reforged. This spell hits a lot in this format, from Esika’s Chariot to Goldspan Dragon, and it can also protect our creatures from death. Great card and should find a home in Standard.

Wizards of the Coast
Abrade is a really powerful and great reprint as well! This hopefully will enable red decks to be able to deal with creatures and Esika’s Chariot as well. This was originally printed in Hour of Devastation and was critical in various red aggro decks, and hopefully we’ll see the same here.

Wizards of the Coast
Syncopate rounds out our reprints so far, and this is a great spell to add to control’s arsenal. It’s versatile and generally should be able to counter anything that we need it to, so it’s a great mana dump. This has seen play throughout the ages of Standard and should see play here as well.
