From the moment just its name was announced, The Meathook Massacre II was one of the most hyped cards in Duskmourn: House of Horror. Many players were excited to see how the new version compared to the original. After all, The Meathook Massacre was an iconic and ban-worthy card in Standard. As it turns out, Meathook Massacre II is quite inefficient and doesn’t pack anywhere close to the same punch as the original.

Meanwhile, the first iteration of The Meathook Massacre continues to rise in price. In fact, traditional copies from Innistrad: Midnight Hunt are now worth a whopping $52! This is the first time the card has topped the $50 mark in months, which is a truly incredible feat for a card from a recent premier set.

The Meathook Massacre Climbs

The Meathook Massacre
  • Mana Value: XBB
  • Rarity: Mythic Rare
  • MTG Sets: Innistrad: Midnight Hunt
  • Card Text: When The Meathook Massacre enters the battlefield, each creature gets -X/-X until end of turn. Whenever a creature you control dies, each opponent loses 1 life. Whenever a creature an opponent controls dies, you gain 1 life.

Back in the middle of July, traditional copies of The Meathook Massacre held a price tag of roughly $33, according to TCGplayer market price. Since then, the card has been climbing nearly every day. There was a small dip between August 8th and August 20th, with The Meathook Massacre falling from $40 to $37. Aside from this, the card has basically done nothing but increase in value over the last month.

This means that over the last month. The Meathook Massacre has gone up by $15, which is a pretty significant margin. It’s one of only a few cards printed in a Standard-legal set in the last three years to maintain such a high price tag. Sheoldred, the Apocalypse is one of the few other cards capable of achieving this feat.

Cause is a Bit Unclear

Witch’s Oven
  • Mana Value: 1
  • Rarity: Uncommon
  • MTG Sets: Throne of Eldraine
  • Card Text: Tap, Sacrifice a creature: Create a Food token. If the sacrificed creature’s toughness was 4 or greater, create two Food tokens instead. (They’re artifacts with “2, Tap, Sacrifice this artifact: You gain 3 life.”)

This begs the question: why does the card keep going up in price? While there doesn’t seem to be any major change that would warrant such a big spike, there are a couple of things that could be having an impact.

First, Jund sacrifice in Pioneer has been seeing a lot more play since the release of Bloomburrow. Ygra, Eater of All and Scavenger’s Talent have proven to be elite additions to the deck. The Meathook Massacre, while not an integral inclusion, does see a lot of sideboard play to help counteract the rise in aggro decks.

Second, all the buzz surrounding Duskmourn may have been a factor in the spike. Meathook Massacre II’s printing alongside the general horror aesthetics may have given The Meathook Massacre more attention. It’s an excellent Commander card, too, which only increases demand. Make sure to be on the lookout for any drastic shifts in this card’s price moving forward.
