Not too long ago, a larger financial shift hit the MTG secondary market. It appeared that the Borderless Poster cards from the Lord of the Rings Special Edition Collector Booster packs were seeing a price increase across a bunch of different variants. Now, another special treatment has multiple different MTG cards spiking in price.
The Showcase Scroll treatment can only be found in Special Edition Lord of the Rings Collector Booster Packs, but plenty can be found within these packs. All of the specific cards spiking have seen demand in the past. It appears that these rarer treatments are either being bought out or are finding a new price point. Shockingly, The One Ring in this specific variant has hit $220 rather consistently.
Showcase Scroll Treatment
We’ve actually already talked about a recent Showcase Scroll Treatment spike. Sauron, Lord of the Rings is not a rare card. This is actually the Face Commander to the Hosts of Mordor Lord of the Rings Commander Precon deck. This is one of the strongest Precons out-of-box that Wizards of the Coast has ever made.
While the traditional foil Sauron, Lord of the Rings is rather cheap, the Showcase Scroll version of the card is more expensive. That said, a series of outlier sales makes it difficult to figure out just how much this card is worth. Nonfoil iterations of the card have been selling for anywhere between $5 and $20. At the time of writing this article, the cheapest Sauron, Lord of the Rings with a Showcase Scroll treatment for sale is $16.
Sauron, Lord of the Rings is one of the Showcase Scroll cards spiking the most, but there are other Showcase Scroll cards that are also seeing a huge price increase. Percentage-wise, Sauron, Mount Doom and The Shire seem to be spiking the most. Mount Doom in its Showcase Scroll variant appears to have spiked from $5 to $10 since the beginning of September, but outlier sales have the card selling for $30-50. Notably, the outlier sales are the most recent ones.
The Shire appears to have doubled in price, too, increasing from $1.50 to $3. Outlier sales for this card are around $7-9, but are sporadic in their timing, making them less believable.
Other Showcase Scroll Increases
While the three cards discussed above are spiking the most, a series of other Showcase Scroll Treatment cards are also increasing in price. The One Ring is an obvious contender for price spikes, and its Showcase Scroll variant has increased to $220.
Nazgul are also increasing in price in this variation. Considering that these Lord of the Rings uncommons are still popular Commander cards, this is not too surprising. Some other Mythic Rares are increasing by smaller $2 increments.
Between the Borderless Poster and Showcase Scroll Lord of the Rings cards seeing sudden price increases, there’s a lot of money in the Special Edition Collector Boosters right now. While this may be the case, those packs have traditionally not been the easiest to find. Prices for these boxes are currently all over the place, with some sellers asking for as much as $900. Considering recent sales on TCGplayer, the most we could recommend buying these boxes for at the time of writing this article is $225. Do be careful if you decide to purchase one of these boxes for a higher price.
