So, you’ve finally caved and downloaded the game, you’ve added a friend, and now you’re ready to challenge them in MTG Arena, right?
It’s been a long time coming, but it’s much easier than it used to be, and that means you’ve really got no excuse not to try and obliterate your friends with your janky homebrew of a deck.
Sometimes you need to let off a bit of steam and chat to a friend online, you know, like we did pre-Covid.
Here’s what you need to know about how to challenge a friend in MTG Arena.
How to challenge a friend in MTG Arena
There are two ways to do this. The first is using the Direct Challenge method.
To do this, click on the two swords on the top right of the screen, then choose the kind of match you want, and then enter your opponent’s name, choose a deck, and then wait for them to also challenge you.
There are a few different modes here, so have a play around and check out all of the options.
You can also just use your friend list to do so by clicking on the person’s name. That’s usually much easier, so we reckon you should stick with that.

Can you play Limited with friends?
No, at least not properly.
While there is a Limited Tournament Match option, it doesn’t let you Draft or play Sealed against a friend, which is a real shame.
What it allows you to do, instead, is use a deck you’ve built that is 40 cards instead of the usual 60 or above.
It means you can try out one of your Draft decks against a friend’s, and you could theoretically pretend you’ve all drafted by doing so, but it’s less than ideal.
