Cheating massive creatures into play is one of the most fun and effective strategies in Commander. Whether you dump massive haymakers into play from your hand or reanimate them from the graveyard, just one play can put you extremely far ahead. Because of this, cards that can cheat things into play repeatedly, like Feldon of the Third Path, can be extremely strong with the right support.
MTG Feldon of the Third Path
Using red’s suite of powerful discard effects like Faithless Looting and Artist’s Talent, Feldon of the Third Path can easily get big creatures into the graveyard. From there, reanimating the likes of Dracuseth, Maw of Flames, or Etali, Primal Storm is trivial. Even creatures like Triplicate Titan can create big value here, taking advantage of Feldon’s tokens dying at the end step.
Many of the best enters and death triggers that Feldon has access to come on artifact creatures like Combustible Gearhulk and Phyrexian Triniform. This opens Feldon up to running a lot of artifact support, like Daretti, Scrap Savant, Goblin Welder, and Goblin Engineer. Since Feldon’s tokens enter as artifacts, these cards can offset their temporary downside, swapping them for something more permanent.
Once you’re ready to start creating tokens with Feldon, there are a ton of ways to make his value go farther. Other copy effects, like Kiki-Jiki, Mirror-Breaker, can double up on all the triggers your tokens make. You can also copy Feldon’s ability with Illusionist’s Bracers, or untap him with Thousand-Year Elixir for multiple activations. Then, with a ton of tokens in play, Sundial of the Infinite can end the turn early to keep them around.
Creating Tokens Infinitely
Taking advantage of Determined Iteration, Feldon of the Third Path can even create a few infinite combat combos. By creating a token copy of Combat Celebrant, for example, Iteration can Populate it at the beginning of each combat, Exert the new token, and repeat the process. Bloodthirster is also capable of pulling this combo off, knocking all of your opponents out.
While not quite as deadly, Diamond Lion can also create an infinite combo with Feldon and Thornbite Staff. After equipping the Staff to Feldon, make a token copy of Diamond Lion and sacrifice it for three red mana. Since a creature died, Thornbite Staff should untap Feldon, allowing you to reanimate the Lion all over again. From here, cards like Impact Tremors or Purphoros, God of the Forge win the game.
A Budget Gem
Between reanimating massive creatures and creating infinite combos, Feldon of the Third Path offers a rather unique game plan for a Mono-Red deck. Despite its appeal, however, Feldon does not see a ton of play as a Commander, helming only 2,242 different decks.
Fortunately, thanks to a fair few reprints, you can try Feldon out for yourself on a budget, with the card costing only $0.71 on TCGplayer. The value Feldon offers is incredible at that price, meaning there’s little reason not to try the card out for yourself.
