Now that Magic’s The Hobbit set has been legal on digital platforms for a couple of days, we’re starting to see some of its cards in action. While it’s early days overall, renowned MTG player Zompatanfo has seen some early Standard success with a spicy Dwarf Typal brew. With the archetype also looking fantastic for Commander, we could be looking at a real Typal contender with this one.
Dwarf Typal In MTG Standard
Zompatanfo’s Dwarf Typal is an aggressive Boros Equipment list packed to the gills with synergistic Dwarves. In addition to the 11 pieces of standalone Equipment it runs, creatures like Dáin Ironfoot and Mabel, Heir to Cragflame can create even more for you.
Once it has some Equipment in play, Dwarf Typal can make fantastic use of it thanks to equip discounts from Dwarven Mauler and Kíli the Resourceful. You can even circumvent equip costs entirely with Zach Fair and Thorin, Mountain-King, allowing for some brutal turns later on.
Though none of the creatures in Dwarf Typal are terribly impressive by themselves, they can quickly become so once they’re geared up. Skateboard and Samurai’s Katana let new threats come down with Haste, for instance, while Leyline Axe grants evasion for big swings. Dwarven Mauler gets scary particularly fast here, potentially swinging as a 4/1 Trampling Double Striker on turn two.
While it’s very much geared towards quick wins, Dwarf Typal has a surprising amount of staying power. Bofur, Reliable Guardian and Thorin Oakenshield help keep your Dwarves around, while Dáin’s Company digs up new ones. It also has access to The Lonely Mountain as a reliable creature factory, capable of launching consistent threats each turn with a solid Equipment suite built up.
Overall, while it’s a fairly simple strategy, Dwarf Typal looks undeniably effective. That said, thanks to recent bans, Standard is in a lot of turmoil now, with a new meta still establishing itself. Because of this, while Dwarf Typal certainly has potential, it’s currently impossible to know whether the deck will end up as part of the metagame.
