Vehicles have always been one of the more entertaining card types in Magic. Ever since their introduction they’ve been the kind of card type you can assume will be fun, and even the much-beleaguered Smuggler’s Copter was still an interesting bit of design.
Well, from even the previews we’ve seen so far of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty, it’s incredibly clear that vehicles are going to be getting a power boost, and we absolutely can’t wait.
Here in my car, I feel safest of all
First is Kotori, Pilot Prodigy, a three-mana white and blue 2/4 that reads, “Vehicles you control have crew 2. At the beginning of combat on your turn, target artifact creature you control gains lifelink and vigilance until end of turn.” This card comes in the Neon Dynasty commander decks, and it’s going to be an excellent commander for the card type. Lowering the crew cost of some vehicles is massive, and you can just fill your deck with artifacts to make use of the second ability no matter what.
You’ve then got the likes of Mechtitan Core which we’ve already written about, and Surgehacker Mech which is a four-mana 5/5 with menace that has a crew cost of four. Along with that, it reads, “When Surgehacker Mech enters the battlefield, it deals damage equal to twice the number of Vehicles you control to target creature or planeswalker an opponent controls.” If you can flicker this thing you’ll be crushing your opponent’s board state.
Finally, there’s Ao, the Dawn Sky, a five-mana white 5/4 with flying and vigilance that reads, “When Ao, the Dawn Sky dies, choose one: Look at the top seven cards of your library. Put any number of nonland permanent cards with total mana value 4 or less from among them onto the battlefield. Put the rest on the bottom of your library in a random order. Or put two +1/+1 counters on each permanent you control that’s a creature or Vehicle.” Being able to either play things for free or buff your board state is going to be huge. Plus, this is just the beginning of things.
