As is now the norm for Universes Beyond sets in Magic, Marvel Super Heroes features many characters with multiple cards. In most cases, this translates to one playable version of an icon and several lower-rarity fillers, but Ultron got lucky. This bionic baddie got a fantastic MTG mythic in the main set, and now it’s getting another stellar incarnation in Ultron, Unlimited.
Ultron, Unlimited MTG

Ultron, Unlimited is a Connive Commander through and through, really letting you showcase this fairly niche mechanic. By creating a 2/2 Robot each time you Connive, Ultron can scale your board quickly, setting up for a mass swing.
Because of this, you’ll want to maximize your Connive count here, and include repeatable Connivers like Ledger Shredder and M.O.D.O.K.. Spells like Lethal Scheme and Change of Plans are huge here too, since Ultron triggers separately on each instance of Connive. With so many triggers, Leader, Super-Genius will serve as a formidable draw engine as well.
Once you’ve got your engine running, you’ll want to think about ways to maximize your Robot army. Since the tokens are artifacts, you can lean into an Affinity theme with cards like Thought Monitor and Krang, Master Mind. You can also leverage go-wide Artifact Aggro cards, like Chrome Dome and Steel Overseer, to really put pressure on your opponents. If you go down this road, token support pieces like Stridehangar Automaton and Worldwalker Helm are must-plays.
Since Ultron, Unlimited will have you constantly drawing and discarding, you can also lean into that if you’d rather. Discard synergy cards, like Monument to Endurance and Bone Miser, will get a ton of mileage here. You’ll also find it easy to stock up your graveyard, letting you dump big creatures and dig them out with spells like Dread Return.
In the same vein, Ultron is great with effects that reward you for drawing cards as well. You can rapidly complete Construct a Cosmic Cube, or burn your opponents down with Gixian Puppeteer. Alternatively, draw doublers like Teferi’s Ageless Insight can do a lot, turning Connive from card neutral to card positive.
Conniving Combos

Ultron, Unlimited has plenty to offer to fair decks, but it’s capable of some infinite combo nonsense as well. When paired with Prowler, Clawed Thief and Phyrexian Altar, for example, it lets you generate infinite enters and dies triggers, as well as loot through your entire deck.
Simply drop Ultron with both other pieces in play, and Prowler will Connive, triggering Ultron’s ability. Pay for it, and you’ll make a token, which will then trigger Prowler. Sacrifice the token for mana, then resolve Prowler’s ability and pay for Ultron’s to continue the loop. This lets you win with all manner of payoffs, from Blood Artist to Thassa’s Oracle. You can even just use your now-massive Prowler to bash in lethal, then Fling it with Rite of Consumption to double-dip.
All in all, Ultron, Unlimited is a very intriguing new Dimir legend, especially given that it was tucked away in a precon. It’s already a solid Commander, and with how many more Marvel sets are likely on the horizon, its Connive synergy will only get stronger over time.
