The Camp Totally Safe Superdrop is looming ever closer on the horizon. Scheduled to be released on September 30th, this Superdrop features multiple exciting crossovers and some truly gorgeous art. Now that everything has been revealed, there’s no denying that there’s a lot to love about this Superdrop.
Following the reveal of the Tome of Astral Sorceress Secret Lair, we believed the Superdrop’s spoiler season was finally over. This seemed like perfect timing given that Duskmourn: House of Horror is releasing imminently, demanding players’ attention. Despite this all working out rather nicely, the Camp Totally Safe Superdrop is having one last hurrah!
Ahead of the Superdrop’s full release in just a few days, one of the most anticipated bonus cards has been revealed. We now know everything the Hatsune Miku: Electric Entourage Secret Lair drop contains. Sadly, this latest reveal isn’t exactly good news for value-hungry MTG players.
Secret Lair x Hatsune Miku: Electric Entourage Bonus Card
As expected, the bonus card for the Secret Lair x Hatsune Miku: Electric Entourage drop is MEIKO. Specifically, MEIKO, Explosive Entertainer is a reskinned version of Chandra, Flamecaller. First seen in Oath of the Gatewatch, this card is hardly a casual or competitive staple.
Before we get to Chandra, it may be worth explaining who on earth MEIKO is. Like most of the rest of the Electric Entourage drop, MEIKO is another Vocaloid from Crypton Future Media. While she may not have the same appeal as Miku, she’s nonetheless a popular character with plenty of dedicated fans.
The fact she is being included as the Bonus Card in this drop isn’t really a surprise, to be honest. When the main cards in the Electric Entourage drop were revealed, MEIKO was obviously missing. Considering they’re one of the main Vocaloids from Crypton, it would have been baffling to exclude her.
Outside of avoiding any MEIKO-based riots, this reveal also confirms the ongoing trend we’ve been watching for some time. Since MEIKO, Explosive Entertainer is card number 807, it’s all but confirmed that Encore Electromancer is the next bonus card. This card is a reskinned variant of Snapcaster Mage that first appeared in the original Hatsune Miku Secret Lair.
When it was first revealed, it was initially presumed Encore Electromancer was an ultra-rare insert and was subsequently incredibly expensive. Even now, this card is selling for over $1,000 on TCGplayer. Chances are, however, this price won’t last as it’s likely a guaranteed bonus card in the final Hatsune Miku Secret Lair.
A Disappointing Dud?
As mentioned, MEIKO, Explosive Entertainer isn’t exactly the most exciting bonus card ever printed in MTG. Not only is it a guaranteed inclusion, but Chandra, Flamecaller is meh at best. This card sees no competitive play and they’re hardly a Commander staple too. As a result, this card is mostly a financial dud.
If you just want to pick up a copy of Chandra, Flamecaller, you only need to pay $0.33. While this isn’t great news for finance fans, there is a silver lining to consider. Not only do rare variants of Chandra, Flamecaller sell fairly well, but this is a Hatsune Miku card. Both of these details could drive demand on their own, and together it could create a winning recipe.
Despite being rather unpopular and unplayable, Chandra, Flamecaller sells for $14 at the high end. This price comes from the SDCC 2016 Exclusive variant which has Chandra being burnt to a crisp. While this rare variant is unsurprisingly expensive, even the Prerelease variant goes for around $5. This may not be the most exciting price in the world, but it’s nonetheless a hell of a lot more than 33 cents.
On the other side of the scale, this isn’t the first seemingly inexpensive Hatsune Miku bonus card. Technically, Elvish Mystic is also only worth around $0.34, yet the Hatsune Miku variant sells for a lot more. Currently, if you want this bonus card, you’ll have to shell out at least $7.49!
While this seemingly spells good news for MEIKO, Explosive Entertainer, it’s worth remembering that Elvish Mystic is a true staple. Being hugely popular in Commander, there’s a lot of demand for fancy versions of this card. The same can’t exactly be said for Chandra, who is a niche card at best.
The Miku Effect
At the end of the day, even if Chandra, Flamecaller is a bad card, there will be demand for MEIKO, Explosive Entertainer. After all, fans of MEIKO and Vocaloids in general may well be tempted to pick up this card. On top of this, supply is bound to be limited as there’s no way this drop won’t sell out.
If past precedent has told us anything, the Secret Lair x Hatsune Miku: Electric Entourage drop will sell out in a matter of hours. Even though the value may not be spectacular, MTG players just love Hatsune Miku apparently. This is going to make every card in the drop, including the bonus cards, rather scarce.
As we’ve seen before, there’s no way this Secret Lair drop doesn’t yield positive value for fans and investors both. Due to this, anyone who is interested will have to be very quick to place their orders. Should you want to do exactly that, you’ll need to be ready on the Secret Lair website at exactly 9 AM PT on September 30th.
