MTG The Hobbit: Release Date, Spoilers, Products, and More

Share

With seven Magic: The Gathering sets being released throughout 2026, it’s very hard to keep track of them all. It certainly doesn’t help matters that Wizards of the Coast keep dropping spoilers and reveals out of order. This is exactly what happened at MagicCon: Las Vegas, where The Hobbit MTG set finally broke cover.

While it’s not the next MTG set to be released, The Hobbit got the most attention at this MagicCon preview panel. With a boatload of details, spoilers, and products all being unveiled, MTG players now have tons to pore over. Thankfully, we’re here to keep you in the loop, with all of the important information in one place.

Here’s everything you need to know about The Hobbit MTG set.

MTG The Hobbit Release Date

MTG The Hobbit

The Hobbit MTG set will be officially released on August 14th, 2026. As always, however, this date doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of Magic. Instead, the actual important date is August 7th, when Prerelease events begin, as that’s when The Hobbit becomes legal to play.

On top of these two key dates, Wizards has confirmed when we can expect more information about The Hobbit set. According to Wizards, this set will be featured at both MagicCon: Amsterdam from July 17th to 19th, and at Gen Con from July 30th to August 2nd.

Currently, the official spoiler season start date for MTG The Hobbit has not yet been announced. Looking back at past sets, however, we can expect spoilers to start roughly three and a half weeks before the set’s release date. Should this past precedent continue, The Hobbit spoilers should start on July 21st.

MTG The Hobbit Spoilers

The Hobbit MTG Spoilers

So far, Wizards of the Coast has officially spoiled ten brand new MTG cards for The Hobbit set. While this isn’t much, many of the new cards are still seriously exciting. The new Bilbo, Thief in the Night, for instance, looks like a fantastic Commander build-around with competitive appeal too. On top of this, the new Smaug the Magnificent is surely an auto-include within any Treasure-focused deck.

Notably, the one ring to rule them all is also returning in The Hobbit, both as a reprint and as My Precious. For better or worse, this new version is a significant downgrade from the past super-staple; however, it’s not without its uses. Offering a useful draw spell Adventure, which appears heavily in the set, and compelling evasion, My Precious should still see strong play.

Notably, The Hobbit doesn’t have any Commander decks; however, there are two Scene Boxes that will contain eternal legal cards. Currently, it’s unknown when these cards will be revealed; however, they could appear at MagicCon: Amsterdam. When more cards get revealed later in the year, we’ll update this article with all the important information.

MTG The Hobbit Card Variants

MTG The Hobbit Treatments

Like every Magic: The Gathering set nowadays, The Hobbit has a plethora of different art and foil treatments for players to collect. While it’s difficult to call this news, at this point, it’s still well worth knowing what you can find. After all, some of the card variants in The Hobbit are bound to be worth serious money.

Fittingly, the most valuable card in The Hobbit set is going to be the gleaming gold Smaug the Magnificent. As the headliner card for The Hobbit, Smaug is the only card in the set getting this treatment. Available exclusively within Collector Boosters, Wizards is printing “approximately 500” copies of the gleaming gold Smaug. Curiously, despite this very limited availability, this variant of Smaug is not serialized.

Dropping down a step, Wizards has also created five “Dwarven Language Cards” for The Hobbit. So far, only Arcane Signet has been spoiled with this treatment, but each of the cards receiving it should be “beloved.” Like the ultra-rare gleaming gold headliner, this treatment can only be found in Collector Boosters.

Available in both Play and Collector Boosters, the “Book Cover” treatment should be a lot more common in The Hobbit. That, however, might not be a positive, given how similar these cards look to one another. Hopefully, MTG players won’t have too much of a problem with these cards, as they do look fantastic and flavorful.

Finally, the “Dragon Horde Frame” is the basic showcase frame for The Hobbit. Appearing in Play and Collector Boosters, this variant is a nice, flavorful overlay to the regular card frame. For better or worse, it’s unlikely cards in this frame will be ultra expensive, but it’s nonetheless a welcome option.

MTG The Hobbit Controversy

MTG The One Ring Art

Unfortunately, even though The Hobbit is still months away from release, this set has already been embroiled in controversy. This is thanks to The One Ring being reprinted with new art from Dan Frazier. Unfortunately, as MTG players quickly discovered, the ring in this art appeared to be copied from the variant by Marta Nael.

Despite first seeming like a conspiracy theory, Wizards and Frazier released a joint statement confirming the new artwork had been traced. Thankfully, Wizards of the Coast is now working to rectify this mistake, compensating Nael while giving her credit. While this is a positive step forward, this controversy has immediately left a black mark on the set.

For those not put off by this controversy, The One Ring is reappearing as a Box Topper in The Hobbit set. This card will be available alongside 40 other cards that all debuted in The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth. So far, Commander staples Tom Bombadil and Sauron, the Dark Lord have also been confirmed as traditional foil Box Toppers. These cards will also appear in Collector Boosters, as non-foil and surge foil variants.

MTG The Hobbit Products

MTG The Hobbit Products

For the most part, the product lineup for The Hobbit set is fairly typical. Outside of the missing Commander precons, all of the usual products are here. Draft Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, Draft Night, and Scene Boxes are all here, as expected. On top of this, it has also been confirmed that we’re five Welcome Decks themed around The Hobbit.

The only real surprise is the Battle of the Five Armies Co-Op Kit, which doesn’t release until 2027. Sadly, details about exactly when in 2027 this product will be released, and what it contains, are currently under wraps. Thankfully, until then, we have been told the MSRP for all of the products releasing on August 14th this year.

  • The Hobbit Play Booster: $6.99
  • The Hobbit Collector Booster: $37.99
  • The Hobbit Bundle: $69.99
  • The Hobbit Gift Bundle: $89.99
  • The Hobbit Draft Night: $119.99
  • The Hobbit Scene Box: $41.99
