When is the Next MTG Set Release Date?

Magic: The Gathering is releasing new products at a rate never seen in its history. After the massive success of Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, Wizards is now being incentivized to fit even more crossover sets in their schedule. Due to many products being added to the yearly plan, moving around an MTG set release date has become annoyingly commonplace.

This makes keeping track of the next MTG release rather frustrating. With that in mind, this article is dedicated to helping you keep track of what and when the next big MTG thing is hitting the scene.

MTG Foundations

MTG Foundations

The next MTG set to release is MTG Foundations. The official set release date at the time of writing is November 15th, 2024. This means that MTG Foundations prerelease events should be scheduled to begin November 8th, 2024.

While the spoiler season kickoff has not yet been confirmed for MTG Foundations, it is largely speculated that MagicCon: Las Vegas will mark the beginning of the set’s spoiler season. Keep your eyes peeled starting October 25th, 2024 for new MTG Foundations cards. Do remember that this date has not yet been officially confirmed, however.

MTG Foundations is a rather unique MTG set that embraces the spiritual return of the MTG core set. Aimed towards new players, MTG Foundations aims to solve a few different problems with one unique solution. Not only will this serve as the new way to teach MTG beginners how to play, but the set is going to be Standard legal for the next five years.

To be specific, MTG Foundations will be legal in Standard until 2029, at the least. Depending on how the set is received, MTG Foundations could continue to be Standard legal even past this date. This should help players weather the extreme changes in Standard deck construction following the rotation of the Standard format. Even after the yearly rotation occurs, players who play with MTG Foundations cards will have a collection that they can reliably use in the Standard format for the next five years.

MTG Arena

MTG Arena doesn’t exactly follow the release schedule of paper MTG sets. Not only does MTG Arena have its own digital product releases, but not every MTG set makes it onto MTG Arena, either.

For MTG Arena, the next new release for the online platform is Alchemy: Duskmourn. Releasing on October 15th, the first spoiler for this digital-only expansion has already been revealed.

Otherwise, MTG Foundations is expected to be released on MTG Arena on November 12th. This follows the expected pattern of new MTG sets being digitally available after prerelease but before the official release of a paper MTG set.

MTG Secret Lair

MTG Secret Lair products also have a relentless release schedule that doesn’t really coincide with other MTG products. While release dates between main sets and Secret Lair Superdrops never coincide, the sheer scale of the releases, as well as the importance in the MTG community, are drastically different. With that in mind, it makes sense to address these releases in a separate section.

At the time of writing, there has been no new Secret Lair Superdrop sale confirmed for future release. While one is definitely coming, we are currently in the sale period for the Camp Totally Safe Secret Lair Superdrop, which went on sale on Monday, September 30th.
