While Wizards made an effort to slow down the regular MTG release calendar, Secret Lair didn’t get the same treatment. For better or worse, we’re still getting an obscene number of Secret Lair drops and even precons every few weeks. As if this wasn’t enough to keep up with, Wizards isn’t above teasing an upcoming Superdrop to kickstart the hype early.
Today, Wizards of the Coast has done exactly that, revealing the Corn Maze Superdrop. While no cards have been revealed so far, the announcement of this drop did confirm three upcoming collaborations.
KPop Demon Hunters Collaboration Confirmed
When it was first announced that Hasbro wanted to do a K-Pop collaboration with MTG, the idea sounded comical. At the time, CEO Chris Cocks said the idea was to attract more women to MTG, making it look like pandering. Following this, however, KPop Demon Hungers was released to huge acclaim, sparking interest in a collaboration.
Now, this collaboration has been explicitly confirmed in the teaser artwork for the Corn Maze Superdrop. Not only is there a bird wearing a hat in the image, a clear reference to the film, but it’s in the copyright disclaimer, too. The same is also true for Marvel and the Jim Henson Company’s film Labyrinth.
While a Marvel collaboration is nothing new in MTG at this point, the expected return of Wolverine and interest in Marvel Zombies have potential. Beyond these, the confirmed Labrinth and KPop Demon Hunters drops have players plenty excited on social media already. That being said, these drops aren’t all beloved, as the relentless release calendar is starting to wear thin.
Overpowering any excitement about the collaborations themselves, multiple comments bemoaned the current speed of releases. Even with as good as they look, Wizards is simply releasing too many drops to realistically afford. Hopefully, these drops will just be reprints so they’re optional, but even then it feels like Wizards is overdoing it.
Coming Soon to a Corn Maze Near You
Given those complaints, it might not be good news that the Corn Maze Secret Lair Superdrop is right around the corner. According to Wizards of the Coast, this Superdrop will launch in less than two weeks, on October 12th. In the meantime, we can expect a mini spoiler season to show off all the drops, but this isn’t guaranteed.
