Emerging MTG Dragon Commander Unleashed By Recent Strixhaven 7-Drop

When it comes to Dragon Typal decks, the best Dragon is so powerful that playing anything else seems silly. Thanks to this, cards like Scion of the Ur-Dragon often get relegated to the 99 as a supporting piece. That said, despite not being a Dragon Typal deck, the power of this underrated Dragon has been unlocked thanks to a Secrets of Strixhaven card that unlocks an insane combo kill.

MTG Scion of the Ur-Dragon in cEDH

In cEDH, Scion of the Ur-Dragon is naturally quite powerful thanks to its color identity, which lets you play all of the best cards by default. While this can easily carry a deck on its own, Scion’s activated ability shouldn’t be dismissed, as it enables some truly busted synergies. Not only can you fetch any Dragon you need in a pinch, but activating it multiple times per turn lets it truly pop off.

This allows Scion of the Ur-Dragon to act as both setup, with Ancient Copper Dragon, and payoff, as Korvold, once you’ve got a bunch of Treasures. At the very least, this can refill your hand; however, until Secrets of Strixhaven, this wasn’t much of a game plan. Now, thanks to Prismari, the Inspiration, all these cards present a potential Storm win.

Considering you only need three cards, which your Commander tutors up effortlessly, this package is incredibly lean. As such, MTG players like Syreno have been utilizing it in an Underworld Breach shell that’s already packed with Storm staples. With cards like Manamorphose, Demonic Tutor, and Brain Freeze, reaching critical mass is surprisingly easy.

Thanks to this powerful strategy, even if your Commander is stopped, you still have a powerful cEDH combo deck to back it up. It might not be the most interesting deck for Scion, but Thassa’s Oracle backed up by all the best interaction is undeniably effective.

Stax is Trouble

Thanks to Prismari unlocking this combo’s potential, Scion of the Ur-Dragon is now taking cEDH by storm. The deck’s abundance of fast mana gives it the potential to present Underworld Breach kills as early as turn one, as well as resolve Scion of the Ur-Dragon in the opening turns. This, combined with powerful interaction, gives Scion a lot of play into noninteractive turbo decks.

Sadly, thanks to its combo focus, Scion of the Ur-Dragon can struggle in games where Stax pieces like Deafening Silence, Archon of Emeria, or Drannith Magistrate come out early. This deck runs very little in the way of permanent removal, making cards like Hexing Squelcher a death sentence.

Even with this in mind, however, Scion of the Ur-Dragon remains extremely flexible, allowing you to prepare for Stax decks if the need arises. With multiple top finishes from this unique Dragon, there’s never been a better time to try this Commander for yourself.
