After skipping 2026 following major changes to the MTG release schedule, rotation is finally back in 2027. In early 2027, rotation will hit Standard, causing one of the biggest shake-ups we’ve seen in years. While this may sound rather daunting, we’ve got you covered with everything you need to know about the 2027 MTG rotation.
When Is MTG Rotation in 2027
The 2027 MTG rotation will occur when Nauctis: The Sunken Realm is released as the first set of the year. Technically, this set will be officially released on February 5th, 2027; however, this date hasn’t determined legality for years. Instead, sets become legal when prerelease events begin, which will be on January 29th, 2027.
Currently, Wizards of the Coast has not officially confirmed the exact time that rotation will happen in 2027. Given our experience, however, we’re 99% confident that the 2027 MTG Rotation will occur on January 29th, 2027.
What Is Rotating Out of MTG Standard in 2027?
When rotation happens in 2027, six major MTG sets will rotate out of Standard. This larger-than-usual rotation is thanks to a major change to rotation going forward that Wizards announced back in 2024. Now, rotation will follow a yearly cycle, where, with the first set of each year, the oldest year of sets will rotate out.
For 2027, this means that almost every set released in 2024 and 2023 will rotate out of Standard. Additionally, Wizards of the Coast will also shut down the Alchemy format at the same time. This means there will be no rotation for Alchemy in 2027, as the format will simply cease to exist.
Here are the six MTG sets rotating out of Standard in 2027.
- Wilds of Eldraine
- The Lost Caverns of Ixalan
- Murders at Karlov Manor
- Outlaws of Thunder Junction (Including The Big Score)
- Bloomburrow
- Duskmourn: House of Horror
Notably, despite being released in 2024, MTG Foundations will not rotate out in 2027. Instead, this set will be legal until 2029, and even then Wizards may extend this set’s lifetime, though that has not yet been confirmed.
MTG 2027 Standard Rotation Impact
With 1,681 cards leaving Standard when rotation happens in 2027, there will unsurprisingly be a profound impact on the format’s metagame. Not only are tons of cards leaving, but many of the rotating sets contain staples empowering many top decks. This will be especially punishing for decks like Izzet Spellementals, as both

Creatures your opponents control can be the targets of spells and abilities as though they didn't have hexproof. Ward abilities of those creatures don't trigger.
all leaving is going to seriously shake up Standard. That being said, some more recent decks shouldn’t be too affected by rotation in 2027. Boros Equipment and Boros Dragons, for instance, almost exclusively use post-rotation cards already.
Notably, while it does seem that Standard rotation will have a tremendous impact, 2026 isn’t finished yet. Reality Fracture is still yet to be released, and the MTG Star Trek set is after that, too. Potentially, if these sets mix up Standard, rotation may end up having a different impact than expected.
MTG 2028 Rotation
Currently, the date for the 2028 MTG Standard rotation has not been confirmed, but we do still know many details. For instance, we know that each of the six Standard legal MTG sets from 2025 will rotate out of the format. We also know it’ll happen alongside the first set of the year, which will release in late January or early February.

Currently, it’s far too early to tell how much of an impact this future rotation will have on the 2028 Standard metagame. Right now, tons of high-power Standard staples are found in these 2025 sets, but they could shift out of the metagame throughout 2027. Ultimately, we can only really wait and see what happens as 2027 progresses and once 2028 rolls around.
