Insane Villain-Copying Card Highlights Nine New MTG Spoilers

Share

Despite Secrets of Strixhaven releasing less than two months ago, Marvel Super Heroes spoiler season has already kicked off. With four new Commander precons alongside a Standard-legal set, there are tons of new cards for players to look forward to. From a Villain-copying card draw machine to a powerful Hero cost-reducer, many of these precons’ secondary Commanders look quite impressive.

MTG Doom Prevails

As the secondary Commander for Doom Prevails, Loki, the Deceiver arguably looks even better than the deck’s Face Commander. Supplying extra bodies and card draw, Loki, the Deceiver can snowball any board state into an advantage. Beyond this, Loki can also provide up to three cards each turn, keeping your hand stocked.

If that weren’t enough, Villain Typal decks already have some extremely powerful enters abilities to abuse with Loki’s first ability. Black Cat, Cunning Thief can refill your hand in a flash, while Carnage, Crimson Chaos can reanimate fallen foes from your graveyard. Throw in Maskwood Nexus for some ridiculous shenanigans and Loki, the Deceiver looks like an all-timer.

While not quite as exciting, Lady Loki, Agent of Chaos lives up to her name, transforming your spells into cards from your deck. This Commander can be incredibly powerful when built around, essentially Polymorphing one-mana cantrips like Expedite into massive creatures. With three attempts at this each turn cycle, Lady Loki already has tons of potential, but she’s even better alongside topdeck manipulation.

If you have time to wait, Kang Prime can also be a powerful Commander. Just fill up your deck with massive payoffs like Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger, and Kang can cheat them into play for free two turns later. You can speed the process up, too, using Jhoira’s Timebug to remove extra time counters, or Paradox Haze for extra Upkeeps.

MTG Avengers Assemble

For Hero Typal fans, Director Nick Fury is the most exciting new reveal from Avengers Assemble. As the secondary Commander for the deck, Nick Fury both accelerates your heroes into play and can assemble more heroes on attack. Notably, Nick Fury doesn’t need to attack himself, both saving himself from harm and allowing you to trigger his effect on the same turn you cast him.

Thanks to this, you can pair Nick Fury with Clone and doubling effects to create a sort of snowball effect. Cards like Spark Double and Sakashima of a Thousand Faces, for example, will let you find two Heroes per attack while reducing their costs further. Add Roaming Throne to double Nick Fury’s triggered ability, and this secondary Commander can easily get out of control.

While a lot more generic, Iron Man, Armored Avenger also appears to be quite a powerful creature. Since Iron Man’s triggered ability can make any creature you control Modified, all you need to set up lethal swings is some card draw. Frankly, this card can see play in all kinds of different Commander decks, ranging from Urza, Chief Artificer to The Council of Four. Notably, because Iron Man is almost identical to Lyla, Holographic Assistant, the card also holds a ton of infinite combo potential.

Captain Marvel, Apex Avenger is the least exciting card of this trio, and that’s mostly thanks to the card’s mana value. Without a lot of counters for her to copy, this is basically a big beater for seven mana. Sadly, Captain Marvel’s color identity also means that the creature doesn’t fit into the stronger Keywords Matter Commander decks in Abzan or Sultai.

MTG Wakanda Forever

Of the secondary Commanders we’ve seen so far, Shuri, the Black Panther looks the least impressive. The card can create havoc alongside Artifact creature token producers like Canoptek Scarab Swarm and Illustrous Wanderglyph, but Shuri struggles to do anything on its own. While cards like Samwise Gamgee can help enable Shuri’s first effect, attacking with your Commander and having three artifacts in play is a lot of hassle for one card.

By blending Voltron and Monarch-focused themes together, Okoye, Mighty and Adored is a very interesting Commander. For starters, guaranteeing you become the Monarch lets you run payoffs like Court of Bounty, but that’s only half the battle. Should the Monarch ever be taken away from you, Okoye can become or create a massive threat, which is especially deadly when coupled with equipment.

Heart-Shaped Herb is a really bizarre effect, offering multiple forms of protection for a moderate cost. The damage-prevention is more relevant than it might seem, staving off common win conditions like Reckless Fireweaver and Sabotender. If that weren’t enough, the reanimation effect is interesting, too, giving your Commander targeted removal protection, alongside making you the Monarch.

More Spoilers to Come

With the Fantastic Four precon Commanders having already been revealed back in December, these are all the Commander cards we’re getting today. Fortunately, if you’re excited to see more, you won’t have to wait long.

According to Wizards of the Coast, the four Commander Precons for this set will be revealed between June 8th and June 11th. Until then, as spoiler season is now in full swing, there should be plenty of main set MTG Marvel Super Heroes spoilers to see.
