MTG Upgrades Take Witherbloom Pestilence From Precon To Powerhouse

Level up to full-on Aristocrat!

For dedicated Golgari fans, Secrets of Strixhaven’s Witherbloom Pestilence Commander precon is a real treat. This is a surprisingly solid deck right out of the box, with strong sacrifice and lifegain themes on offer. If you want to really get the most out of MTG Witherbloom Pestilence, however, then you can make it a lot better with some well-chosen upgrades.

Committing To The Bit

MTG Witherbloom Pestilence Upgrades Synergy

The first step to making Witherbloom Pestilence a better deck is to address the synergy split in the base version. There are competing themes of Aristocrats and Lifegain here, so to maximize consistency, we’ll want to focus purely on the former.

Defiling Daemogoth, Trudge Garden, Blossoming Bogbeast, and Veinwitch Coven are all easy cuts here, as fairly inefficient Lifegain cards. You can swap these out for some staple Aristocrats cards instead, like Pitiless Plunderer, Cauldron of Essence, and Carrion Feeder. You can also add Birthing Ritual which easily subs in for Witch of the Moors.

Witherbloom Pestilence also includes some cards that encourage attacking, which doesn’t gel well with the Aristocrats playstyle. Both Stensian Sanguinist and Ohran Frostfang, for instance, are better swapped out for Village Rites and Skullclamp.

It’s also worth weighing up the efficiency of some of the Aristocrats support already in the deck. Both Mycoloth and Creakwood Liege are unexciting cards in 2026, and can be replaced with Marionette Apprentice and Spawning Pit.

Pumping The Power

MTG Witherbloom Pestilence Upgrades Power

Now that Witherbloom Pestilence is looking more like a proper Aristocrats deck, we can look at improving the efficiency of its more general cards. The deck’s starting ramp suite, for instance, includes the underwhelming Springbloom Druid and Cultivate, which would be better as Elves of Deep Shadow and Flare of Cultivation.

On the interaction front, the deck suffers a lot from poor initial picks as well, with Casualties of War, Mortality Spear, Merchant of Venom and Deadly Brew all present. Druid of Purification and Abrupt Decay can come in for Casualties and Spear, while Flare of Malice and Grist, the Hunger Tide can come in for Merchant and Brew. You’ll also likely want to swap out Infernal Grasp for Sheoldred’s Edict, since it hits every opponent at once.

On the graveyard hate front, Witherbloom Pestilence starts with the incredibly clunky Feral Appetite, which can easily sub out for Dauthi Voidwalker. You’ll also want to take out the similarly inefficient Teacher’s Pest, and swap it for the ol’ reliable Gravecrawler. There’s a good number of Zombies in the deck as-is, and this card is an easy gateway into combo wins if you’re willing to splash some cash.

Final Flourishes

Expensive Upgrades

While the above upgrades can all be made on a reasonable budget, Witherbloom Pestilence can become even more fearsome if you add some pricey MTG staples. Phyrexian Altar and Warren Soultrader, for instance, can sub in for Gyome, Master Chef and Moldervine Reclamation to speed up your deck massively.

If you really want to push Aristocrats to its limits, Sephiroth, Fabled SOLDIER and Yawgmoth, Thran Physician are essential draw engines to add, in exchange for Night’s Whisper and Eccentric Pestfinder. While you’re at it, cut Dina, Soul Steeper for The Meathook Massacre, and Gilded Goose for Birds of Paradise as well, if you’ve got the cash.

You’ll definitely want to give the deck’s mana base some love, too, adding the usual suite of Fetch lands, Shock lands, and such if you can. On top of that, Phyrexian Tower and Boseiju, Who Endures are great utility land adds, providing huge power if you can foot their huge bills.

Assuming you’re playing at bracket three, you can also massively improve Witherbloom Pestilence by adding some Game Changers. Orcish Bowmasters is an ideal add here as a ridiculous token producer, and The One Ring and Vampiric Tutor help keep your games consistent. To make room for this formidable trio, cut Beledros Witherbloom, Witherbloom Command, and Ribtruss Roaster.

Time To Lock In

With all of these upgrades in the mix, Witherbloom Pestilence goes from an unfocused, mediocre deck to a laser-focused Aristocrats list. While it’ll likely need some more tutors and combo elements to compete at bracket four, our upgraded version should be more than good enough for bracket three tables.
