Among the archetypes that The Hobbit supports, Dwarf Typal is seeing the most interest. With tons of new cards and an extremely powerful Commander available, players are racing to pick up Dwarves to build their decks. Thanks to this, and her ability to help The Hobbit’s Treasure Commanders, Magda, Brazen Outlaw is spiking in price.
MTG Magda, Brazen Outlaw

Even after the release of The Hobbit, Magda, Brazen Outlaw is the absolute best Dwarf Typal support in Magic: The Gathering. On top of ramping you on her own, Magda can turn all of your Dwarves into Treasure factories alongside a Vehicle like Smuggler’s Copter. Thanks to this, Magda is an amazing support piece for multiple new Dwarf Typal Commanders.
Among the new Commanders interested in playing Magda, Thorin, King of Durin’s Folk is the biggest driver, with 2,060 decks playing the card, and it’s no wonder why. Thanks to Thorin buffing all of your Dwarves from Treasures, Magda is absolutely incredible here. With the amount of Treasures Thorin creates, you can even pull off Magda’s final ability, cheating in something like Portal to Phyrexia to steal the game.
Outside of Dwarf Typal, Magda’s Treasure generation also makes it great alongside three new Smaug Commanders, who all care about Treasure tokens. The Dwarf is particularly good in Smaug, Wicked Wurm decks, where the extra Treasure tokens can directly turn into new cards.
Between Dwarf Typal and Smaug decks, Magda is extremely popular with The Hobbit’s Commanders, appearing in 6,300 different decks. Considering this, it’s no wonder that demand has increased.
The Spike

Ever since The Hobbit’s spoiler season kicked off, Magda has been flying off the shelves. Since mid-July, roughly 580 near-mint copies have sold for Magda’s original variant alone, and demand continues to rise. Thanks to this, Magda’s cheaper month-old $2 price tag is now long gone, with near-mint copies now going for $7.10 at the absolute cheapest.
Sadly, because worse-conditioned copies have been bought up, there are no cheaper copies of Magda available, and her other variants just get more expensive. With Magda’s showcase variant at $9.10, its List reprint at $10, and her Secret Lair reprint at $13, there are no more deals left for this Dwarf.
A Promising Staple
Despite Magda being incredible support for Treasure decks, this card’s price tag seems likely to follow the normal curve for Commander cards. Once players get their Dwarf Typal Commander decks together, demand is likely to fall, as will Magda’s price. Future support for Treasure Typal decks could keep this up, but according to Magda’s price history, that seems unlikely.
Despite Magda seeing a massive surge in demand thanks to The Hobbit, this actually pales in comparison to past demand spikes. At the end of November, Magda had a much larger demand spike than she’s currently seeing, but it didn’t budge her price at all. In fact, despite being a popular cEDH Commander, Magda has never been able to retain a price spike in the five years she has been printed.
That said, as always, this particular spike could be the one to stick, as the future is impossible to truly predict. As a result, we have no choice but to wait and see what happens in the coming weeks. Hopefully, however, Madga does come back down in price eventually, as it’s a strong red creature for all kinds of different Commander decks.
